Great compressor, but...

Craftsman Professional 80 Gal. Vertical Air Compressor, 5.4 hp —

I haven't had this compressor long, but so far it is working flawlessly and runs surprisingly cool. After thirty minutes of continuous operation, the motor is almost cool to the touch, and while the pump cylinders are definitely warm, they are nothing like what you would expect after such use. There are a couple of things I do not like about the unit. The compressor pictured on the Sears website has a ball valve (which is preferable) and mine came with a 1/2" gate valve. The air cleaner fitting that screws into the cylinder was not even hand tight. The air pressure gauge was adjusted so that it almost faced the floor. Also, like with other compressors in its class, the drain valve is located at bottom center of the tank. To operate the valve, you have to get on your hands and knees and reach way under the compressor into a dark hole. I don't know about anyone else, but most shops I have been in, including my own, have enough creepy crawlies to make me wary of sticking any appendage into any dark hole. I do my best to keep a clean working environment, but we still find the occasional spider (some hazardous and some benign) or wasp or hornet. I removed the drain valve, and fitted the drain hole with an assembly consisting of a 90 degree street elbow, a 10 inch nipple, a 90 degree elbow and then the drain valve. The drain valve now sticks out just beyond the ring the compressor sits on so I don't have to risk a spider bite to drain the water. Besides the above mentioned minor gripes, this compressor really gets the job done. I bought it to operate a 1 drive impact wrench and it makes way more than enough air to power that and a couple other air tools at the same time. As long as this thing operates trouble free, it will be one heck of a bargain.
