I typically use the cup style wrench to remove oil filters.  I have a nice set with a variety of sizes.  Every now and then, the combination of an extra tight oil filter and an oil filter made with thin metal happens.  The cup wrench slips and the filter won't come off.  The Craftsman wrench comes...

Works wonderful,when it's not broken

So i bought this item because i trust the Craftsman name, but after about 1 year of using it professionally the gears stripped out and the arms sit kind of off center. I went to exchange it for another one , but Sears was all out of them so i was forced to keep it for the time being. I really love how... read full review »

Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto... Reviews

Displaying reviews 1 - 14 of 40 in total

I had this wrench for almost a year and it never failed to rip off an old, stuck on filter but it did have one fault straight out of the off the box.  The arms that actually grab the sides of the filter are a bit too rounded for a fresh tool.  In the beginning I found that it would slip a little then catch and run the filter off which was fine but but not what I expected from Craftsman.  A little grinding of the flats on the arms and everything was all right after that.  There's nly two other small problems with an otherwise great tool.  The first problem was the rivets, after repeated use...

This oil filter wrench from Craftsman is a great tool to have for any oil change. This makes getting even the tightest of oil filters off of a car with little effort. It simply goes on your 3/8 ratchet of choice, put it on the filter and turn. Next thing you know the oil filter's tight seal has broken free and you can remove it with ease. With the use of an extention between this and your ratchet you can get if the hardest to reach filters removed.

This filter wrench works very well at getting off stubborn filters and I really like how easy and effective it grabbed the filter once I applied torque to the wrench.  I disliked however that mine does not have a little grove in the ratchet slot to hold it on the ratchet and the first time I used it, after I got the filter loose, it fell off the ratchet and into the oil drain pan.  That is not enough to deter me from using it because it still works excellent and I can use it on almost any car that you can get a filter cap wrench in there to take the filter off.  Really it would be perfect if...

Works well

As mentioned in previous reviews, it is nice to have an adjustable wrench. The all metal construction is a plus too. All too often I have bought the plastic ones the end up stripping and have to toss them. This one is a keeper.

Oil wrench works great

I bought this oil wrench to use on my lawn tractor and my car with the reccomendation of an employee in the Sears Auto Department. I have used it once on each so far and it has worked great. It is easily attached to a ratchet and locks on to the different filters well .

This tool saved me from having to have my '03 VW GTI towed into a shop to remove the oil filter from my car.  I had previously destroyed the oil filter thinking if I can get it all cut away from the flange I could get it off somehow.  That didn't work and in retrospect was a silly idea.  I bought this gem from Sears.com and within seconds the remnant of my oil filter was off the vehicle.

I'm a mechanical engineer who designs steel equipment as well as structures.  I have to say the construction of this tool is excellent.  Very sturdy and heavy.  It takes just a few seconds to kind of squeeze...

Never breaks, cuts oil change time drastically, and to top it off, no shaved knuckles. Buy it. Right now.

I love this oil filter wrench. i work at ford doing mostly oil changes and i use it all the time. We have the metal strap wrenchs and they never seam to fit in the locations of the oil filters but mine will. This is also a better guality then others of the same type. one of the techs at my work has at 3 prong one from cornwell and his has broken twice and mine is still going good.

Saves time and knuckles

I wrestled for nearly an entire weekend with an oil filter that the car dealer installed ridiculously tight. The filter wouldn't budge no matter what tool I used - strap wrenches of various sizes just slipped, and I wasted two bucks on a Wal-Mart plastic socket oil filter wrench that slipped as well. Access wasn't a problem - I could get both of my meaty hands around it, it was clean and despite using latex gloves for a good grip, trying to unscrew it by hand just made my hand sore. It took weeks for the pain to go away. I found this one the Sears website. The filter came off in about half a second.... read full review »

BEST TOOL

I TRIED FOR OVER 1 HOUR TO REMOVE THE 4 INCH OIL FILTER ON MY CAT C-7 DIESEL THAT WAS BAKED ON FROM THE FLORIDA HEAT. I USED STRAP-PLIERS & BAND OIL FILTER TOOLS . WENT TO SEARS TIRE & AUTOMOTIVE CENTER PURCHASED THE CRAFTSMAN SA706 PUT IT TO WORK - 20 SECONDS LATER THE PROBLEM FILTER WAS OFF AND IN MY HAND. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT WORKED SO QUICKLY. THE CRAFTSMAN WRENCH NEVER LET GO NOR DID IT SLIP ,DID NOT CRUSH THE FILTER & CAUSE OIL TO GET ALL OVER.--CAN BE USED IN REVERSE TO TIGHTEN A PROBLEM FILTER. A SMALL TOOL BUT DOES THE JOB MUCH LARGER MORE EXPENSIVE TOOLS CAN'T. AS OF NOW IT IS THE #1... read full review »

I purchased this about two weeks ago. It's great for getting the filter off my truck and my car. Plus I used it on my friends Jetta with the black canster that holds his oil filter in place. YOu don't have to burn your hands anymore attempting to get the oil filter changed. And you have to love that. Totally worth the price.

Not as easy as it looks

Bought this and was a little disspaointed.  Wasn't as easy as I thought.  Had trouble with the teeth slipping.  Took it back for a refund.

The last filter wrench you'll ever need

I only need a filter wrench when I buy a new car. The manufacturer always over-tightens the oil filter at the factory. Fortunately this little beauty should handle just about any size filter in just about any oddball position the manufacturer chooses to put it. It folds up very compact when not in use. Mine will now sit in the tool box until I buy my next car.
