Craftsman Weed Eater —

My dad is really hard to buy for - he's a simple guy with simple taste. He likes to do the typical "dad" things like golf and work in the yard, but he's the kind of guy that actually wears the free windbreakers they give him at golf tournaments, instead of going out and buying the wind repel-water repel-sweat wicking-lowers-your-score-by-at-least-5-strokes kind of jacket. So buying him gifts is hard. That is, until I got him started on the Craftsman Line Trimmer series with detachable heads. I started out easy with just the gas powered line trimmer for Father's Day 2005, and at first, it didn't seem like a particular success. The thing sat in a box until late in the 2007 season. I think guilt made him finally take it out of the box, but he hasn't looked back since then, and I've kept adding to that same base tool at each holiday! He's now the proud owner of a brush whacker (actual blade for thwacking small trees and heavy brush), a pole pruner (can trim trees and bushes), and a blower (he can clean out his pachysandra ground cover without trampling the poor little plants) . I think what he likes about it best is that the base mechanism is the same every time - which means he doesn't have to maintain multiple mechanical parts - clean out motors or change gas/oil. He just swaps out whichever head is appropriate for the job he wants to do.Great gift idea because it's solved more than one gift giving conundrum!
