This is hands down the best thing I ever bought for my kids.  They love it and use it often.  It requires minimal adult supervision, unless your children don't obey.  We have made hundreds of crayons, and have a basket full of broken crayons ready to melt into new ones.  Cheap crayons won't melt,...

smells funny

the new Crayola Crayon maker seems cool at first but in a few uses, the colors just all come out brownish greenish. I had to scrape away the previously melted colors to get a good mix of yellows and orange. That's the only down side I see that the colors you melt, leave a reside and stain the new colors...

The Crayola Crayon Maker sounds like it would be great to recycle old crayons.  My kids got one for Christmas last year and it drove us nuts.  You have to set the timer, while the machine melts the crayon pieces in the molds.  The molds tilt and fall and you can not stop the machine until the timer stops, which is 20 minutes.  We tried it many times, and probably only got about 10 totally formed crayons.  We gave it to a neighbor kid, who had the same problems as us.  Save your money!
