I have owned MANY cordless drills. I started years ago with a first generation 4.8-Volt one with only 1 speed & built in battery pack, it was really worthless from the start & it only lasted a year. The last one was a Black & Decker FireStorm 14.4-Volt that lasted about 4 years, even though the batteries started to weaken after 6 months. Cordless drills certainly have come a long way since the begining. I bought DeWalt (a subsidiary of Black & Decker as of 1960) because they are found everywhere (hardware stores, tool stores, home centers, internet, etc.) so you can buy replacement batteries easily. I bought the 18-Volt because for the higher power & longer run time. It has a 2-speed gearbox. Forward & Reverse. Variable speeds (0-450 & 0-1500 RPM). 450 in/lbs torque. 380 UWO (Unit Watts Out). Choice of 17 position clutch or total lock position. 1/2" (13mm) single sleeve plastic keyless ratcheting chuck. Comes with drill, hard carry case, 2 batteries, double-ended phillips/slotted bit, & 1 hour charger. This drill does not have all the fancy bling bling like the higher priced drills, but it does have the torque like them. Its not a hammer drill. It is not the XRP (extended run time/performance battery) version, but when the batteries eventually fail you can buy the XRP batteries for a replacement - unless they change the design in the future all DeWalt 18-Volt batteries fits all DeWalt 18-Volt cordless power tools (all are interchangable). The only real negative I can think of is that the 18-Volt (and higher voltage) tools tend to be too heavy for the average consumers light duty use that does not require the extra power like commercial/industrial jobs do. Your arm will get tired if your not use to it.

I_thumb_up DeWalt 1/2 in. Cordless Drill/Driver Kit is recommended by BigDaddyS
