I'm familiar with the DW788 and have always thought them to be a good investment for a scrollsaw. However, now that they are made in Taiwan & China I find that the quality has been reduced. The blade hole doesn't match up properly but after alittle use and a couple of blades the hole is open enough to use properly Obviously the table is made of some cheap soft metal. The same problem with the tension cam. (Very soft metal used...wouldn't surprise me if it was lead.) After 1 months use the inner teeth are already wearing down. I anticipate it having to be replaced in less than 90 days. This is a very common problem with the new models. I purchased the 5yr. extended warranty simply because I expect to run into problems.....like I said it's now made outside of Canada. The saw I have from 2001 is still working like the day I got it. It was made in Canada but after 2006 they outsourced to China. Considering the chepaer way it is made these days I think the price at Sears is very...
...

I am a beginning scroller. I read a number of product reviews in wood magazines and saw several of the models I was interested in demonstrated (and tried them too). I was interested in ease of use and dependability. The Dewalt has lived up to my expectations in every way. Set up was easy, and blade changing simple. Cuts are smooth. There are better, and more expensive, saws out there, but for the money, the DeWalt is a GREAT deal.
...

TheTradesman says "A Professional Saw For Very Intricate Fretwork" about DeWalt 20 In. Variable-Speed Scroll Saw

I received a Dremel Scroll Saw for Christmas one year and after a year of long and intense session's of Scroll Saw Fretwork, the Dremel decided to shut down on me. I needed a professional saw that could handle hours upon hours of detailed cutting. I did not want another scroll saw that failed to survive the demand of constant pressure on the motor and other moving components.

I came across an advertisement that offered a DeWalt 20" DW788. After reading the specifications on this model and noticing that the design looked aggressive and well planned out, I figured I had to own one.

I love the quick disconnect blade system. You will find a simple thumb-screw blade clamp below the left-right tilting table and another one above the table just a few inches away from the lever action blade tensioner.

I also love how the DeWalt DW788 has a built in air bellows that pumps a guided stream of air into the cutting path of the blade to help you keep saw dust away from your view of the cutting line....
...

handyman2722 says "The Dewalt Scrollsaw is quiet, and has a very smooth cut." about DeWalt 20 In. Variable-Speed Scroll Saw

I have had a couple of scrollsaws before this one, but this one is the best. The blade changes are fast and easy. Once you get use to the saw and the blade tension it is a dream for a good wood worker. However, I would not recommend this to a person just starting out on a scroll saw, this is for people with experience. It has a very fine cut and you need to know what you are doing. I don't think there is a better saw on the market right now.
...

This is my 3rd saw and I am well pleased, It out performs all
the rest that I had. The only thing that I don't like is that
it has no dust collector, But other than that I have no complains. I have read that some people have trouble with
blades breaking, I have had no problems with that, My favorite blades are the Olson 5r....

If you are looking for a scrollsaw and you can look over the little bit higher price then the little ones then this is the best scrollsaw for you this is my 5th scrollsaw (all 4 were different) and I will if needed keep getting the same one it makes scrolling so much ez er nicer/better cuts.gett the wood on and off is so ez its a sin. little vibes the ONLY thing you need to watch is how you put the blade on but if it breaks on you just call them they replace it FREE. If you have it then I know you will but if you don't then get it and have fun and stay safe....
