Most Helpful Critical Review
One cold (around -20f), dark (six hours of daylight) morning my daughters car would turn over. She hadn't plugged in the engine heater. I thought "this will be a good test for the new battery charger I just bought" - a Sears 71227, fancy, microprocessor controlled, does it all pretty much automatically... read full review »

great charger

Great charger for the price. Charges batteries quickly!

I purchased this charger 14 months ago and it is already fried. I do not use it that much but when I needed it most it let me down. Why do Sears products always seem to do that ? I do not think I will ever buy another Die Hard product because they are living on reputation. 30 years ago Sears batteries and chargers were good. I would even see them in service stations. Now, they have sold out to the cheapest suppliers and manufacturers. I guess we will be speaking Chinese in ten years.

I purchased this item to replace a Shumacher Auto Charger that had kicked the bucket.  This item came out with a lifetime warranty which is now 3 yrs.  Maybe you'll get 2 out of it.  My first one died under the lifetime.  Evidently the fan quit and the unit overheated & crapped out.  My replacement is now on it's last leg and have owned for 2 years.  The fan is groaning!  I am looking to purchase a replacement fan before frying components but the chinese market is small on this.  What happened to the Sears Reputation?  There should be thousands of these fans available as this is a major...

First one, DOA.  Returned to store.  Second one, starts to charge then clicks off.  This has happenned to both of my cars, one ten years old and one two years old (I left the radar detector plugged in and drained the battery).  I can't find the receipt or this would go back too.  Better off investing in a higher level AAA membership!

Piece of Junk

I have had thise Charger for about 1 1/2 years. Bought it to replace another Charger that had been Recalled. Have used it only twice. First time was a year ago. The "Check" light came on, and after messing with it, it finally charged the Battery. Last night i puulled it out to charge a battery. Same thing, "Check" light came on. No matter what I do, it will not go out. I took it back to Sears today, and they said they only accept returns within 90 days. I will call Sears to see about the 3 Year Warranty. I expected more from something with the "Sears" name on it.

I purchased this charger to replace an old analog type charger. although it works well, it has some short commings. with my typical use, it has become a bit of a pain to use. I have a couple of old cars in my garage and typically the batteries in them are completly dead by the time I have some interest in taking them for a spin ( yes i should disconnect their batteries but I don't). With my old charger I would connect the charger to the battery, run an extension cord from the charger in the garage to the house and plug it in, let it charge for a few hours and then unplug the extention cord....

DEAD on ARRIVAL

DIE HARD Charger - WAS DEAD on ARRIVAL. Brought home to jump start a Month old Battery that uses a 6 month old Alternator in a 2000 Ford Ranger after my 16 year old left headlights on draining battery... Anyway 125 amp jump start feature didnt work, neither did any other feature (2 amp charge, 15amp charger, nor the 40 amp charge).. mattery of fact the "check" light on the charger was on the whole time. removed battery and tried again. samething..   When I read the manual "check" light means a battery is not registering.. Obviously its the DIE HARD Battery charger came DEAD on ARRIVAL.

Total waste

I have had this charger about eighteen months. I returned it to the store the first time I tried to use it. The Dept. manager was able to get it to work on a battery in the shop, so I brought it back home-bad mistake. This charger has been intermittent since day one. sometimes it works for a few minutes sometimes not at all. You definitely cannot leave it alone and expect the battery to be charged when you return twelve or 24 hours later. I bought this charger to replace a Sears charger that is about 20 years old and not completely functional. Unfortunately, when I try to use this modern, microprocessor... read full review »

71227 is top of the line

I tested the 71227 charger, and like it. The meter accuracy is within 0.05 volts, and the charging algorithms appear to work quite well, although they are not described in the instructions. I observed that the voltage was generally limited to 15.5 for regular, 16.0 for deep cycle, and 14.7 for AGM batteries. The 40 amp capability is in the form of a long timed pulse of about 2 minutes followed by 15 amps for a similar time period, then repeating until the voltage has risen enough that it isn't required. The amperage isn't constant, it tapers down to limit the voltage in typical CC/CV fashion,... read full review »

Excellent but...

Bought this charger two weeks ago as a replacement for an older deep cycle unit for use with a DieHard Platinum Marine battery. This charger did a much better job of topping up the battery than the old unit -- I got about 20% more run time out of the battery after this charger got through with it. Charging time was somewhat faster as this unit can source up to 40A. A couple of things to note: 1) You MUST connect the battery before plugging in the charger or it may not start its charging cycle properly. 2) If running on a generator you will note that during the early phase of the charging cycle,... read full review »

Great for Gel or AGM batteries

AGM and Gel batteries are very sensitive to over voltage. I purchased a so called AGM charger from another store and it charged the battery at 15.3 volts, which is way to high. This charger uses 14.7 volts on gel/AGM batteries which is within the maximum voltage to charge these batteries. I use this on an electric vehicle to balance the battery pack if one or more batteries is lower than the rest of the pack. Works excellent. I use this charger a lot and have never experienced a problem. I do agree with other reviewers that if the ac power is interupted the charger will not start up again in the... read full review »

Great Charger

I have had other charger over the years, but this one is by far the best. I have used the jump start feature twice, and the 125 amp worked perfectly. The different charging levels make it very versatile, and the automatic operation works perfectly, eliminating the worry of leaving it on too long.
