LockedCompactor doesn't compact!!

My Kenmore compactor worked fine for about 18 months, then began emitting a loud grinding noise when trying to compress the trash in its bin.  The grinding begins when the ram assembly meets resistance from the trash.  I can stop the compaction cycle and return the ram assembly to its upper position by turning the control knob. Trash is pushed down in the bin a bit, but definitely not compacted.

Any ideas? I'd rather buy a part and repair the beast than drop another $500+ for a new one.

Check out the exploded parts diagram on the Sears Parts Direct site, using the machine's long model number, found on its data plate.

Good luck.

unplug the machine lay it on its back take off bottom panel and look at the gears and chain you should see tha problem in that area if not the palstic mounts in the ram that the worm gears drive are bad

And, the Parts Direct site can be used to determine what the repair part(s) cost will be, to get the unit up and running again.

Good luck.

The grinding sound "sounds like" stripped gears or a worn chain.

A loud humming sound would indicate the motor.

You didn't mention a loud humming sound.

Lucky you...

A new motor is generally way more expensive than gears or a new chain/set of sprockets.
