I have a kenmore 3/4 HP that I have had for about 5 years....it suddenly has quit. I flipped it on and heard a slight humm but it did not come on and then the hummm faded till it dead stopped...Now when you flip the switch there is nothing, no response at all....Does the unit need to be replaced or could it be a part that just needs replaceing?????ElizabethB

It could just be jammed.

With the power OFF, feel around for a bone or fork or some such jamming item.

Try to rotate the inside cutting head by hand.

If it wont rotate, you got a jam!

There is a garbage disposer cutter rotating tool you can use to attempt to un-jam it.

Or, some Kenmore disposers have a hex key hole on the bottom of the unit, to attempt manually unjamming the disposer.

Good luck.

Sounds like you need to first hit the RESET button on the bottom (it should be red), then use the disposal wrench to loosen the jam. If that doesn't work, call 800 4 MY HOME. It may still be covered by the warranty.

Reset switch!

Good idea.

They all got them switches?

That reset switch is actually a thermal overload.  Better to free up that disposal before pushing that one.. and dont ask anyone to push that button while your hand is in the business end of that disposal!

It should be turned off before doing ANYTHING. :)

Thanks so much, I hadn't seen the hex key hole. After I rotated it a couple of times and hit the reset it works again like a charm....You saved me from buying a replacement and alot of work to install it, again Thanks. This is another reason I buy Kenmore

I have done all of the above to my Kenmore 3/4 HP disposal: reset button, used the hex wrench - however, could not make it jiggle more than 1-inch back and forth. Unplugged it and reached inside. One of the grinders moves freely around, however, the other is catching on a metal "something" protruding from the wall of the chamber. Not sure what this could be. Can I flatten it with a screwdriver? Took the plumbing traps apart and there are no clogs. Thank you.

Thank you!! this did work and helped me reset the incernator... if it wasn't for this, i would have bought a new one for no reason at all... thank you again.
