What is the best brand for camping equipment (i.e sleeping bags, tents, jackets, etc.)?

Off the top of my head: #1 Northface and #2 Columbia.

Any opinions?

There are many brands that manufacture great camping equipment.  Most definitely Northface and Columbia are great brands but they are at the higher price range levels.  Other great brands that offer quality products at a value are Northwest Territory and Coleman.  You will be able to find sleeping bags, stoves, lanterns, tents, accessory's and just about anything else you will need.

My friends from the Northeast swear by LL Bean.

If you want to be warm, find a bag with thinsulate(3M trademark) insulation.

I am definitely a fan of the North Face. They have very unique and durable products.

That is a WAY broad question. That's like asking, what is the best brand for cars? Or what is the best brand for clothing? The answer is that certain brands specialize more in certain equipment, and certain models/items across different brands excel. North Face is a quality manufacturer, but they tend to be quite expensive, as many people will pay a premium for the "yuppiness" of the brand. AKA go to Lincoln Park, Chicago on a weekend and look at all the North Face clad people. So it is my opinion that you can get equal or better camping apparel than North Face for a lower price. However, North Face does make some good gear. I have the North Face Cat's Meow sleeping bag and I love it.

Not as familiar with Columbia, but I really like the following products I own:
-Big Agnes Sleeping Pad (packs the size of a Nalgene, is over 2 inches thick, is much lighter than the Brand Name ThermaRest which tend to be more bulky and expensive)
-WhisperLite International Portable Stove. Hugely successful for good reason, and can burn basically any fuel, including unleaded gasoline.
-REI Quarterdome Tent - one of the lightest 3 season, 2 man tents out there. I love it. It's been through a couple of crazy midwest wind/thunder/lightning storms.

What ever happened to roughen it.

A sleeping bag, a couple cans of porking beans with the pop top, a few potatoes you can drop down in your fire with tin foil and  cook, a canteen or two full of water and of course the matches and toilet paper.

How is this for dating myself... A Woods down bag, Eureka tent and Svea 123 stove.

How about half an Army pup-tent, with a partner that has a "matching" half (buttons or snaps)?

Having BOTH kinds of halves, after a hard day of foxhole digging is not a fun time camping.

Neither is not having no fire...

Do not buy Northpole Limited tents they discontinue them frequently and do not maintain enough stock to replace parts that get damaged. Not sure if Sears sells them but their off shoot Kmart does.
