Kenmore freezer about 7 years old kept in garage stopped working and will not stay cold.  Is it worth repairing it or should we consider replacing it?  Money is tight and it is not possible to replace currently so I don't have a working freezer other than the one in the refrigerator.

If Its not rusted out bad Its worth fixing if its not a sealed system (freon) problem. can you tell if the compressor is running in rear?

It has no rust at all. It is located next to the interior wall close to my kitchen door from the garage.  I think the compressor did give out.  The freezer came without any kind of fan to cool the motor/compressor.  I was told by a repairman that a fan would be a good idea for the unit.  We did use a small box fan near the compressor of the freezer to try to help the problem.  Still, my freezer just stopped keeping the proper internal temperature.  It is a manual defrost unit, upright unit, no interior light, etc.  It is the basic unit that performed well for a time, but then developed problems.  Of course, it happened outside of the warranty period.  Do you have any suggestions?  I would appreciate your input.

Have the cooling fins been cleaned?

Mine were filthy (may it rest in piece).

I recently purchased refrigerator for summer home, sometimes  heat goes out in winter.  I was told to shut refrigerator off, pull plug when we were not at the house, as  compressor will go out trying to maintain temperature.

Go outside and enjoy the view, south carolina is pretty. :) thats my advice

You can either call a repair man, who will charge you a fee just to diagnosis it, he will tell you whats wrong etc or you can go buy a new one.

You can take off the back, UNPLUG Is and clean out the stuff if its dirty, since you wont void your expired warranty LOL.
