LockedKenmore Elite smart wash quiet pack 4

This front load washing machine is supposed to be quiet. After 3 months of owning it, it started squeaking really bad.  Keep in mind there are only two of us so the workload is not very heavy.  We called Sears to get a repair man and the first one said he could not simulate the problem and the second one said that we had it overloaded with laundry.  We only had 4 bathtowels and 2 handtowels and he insited that it was too much.  He said "you are just going to have to change your lifestyle for the new machine"  Are you kidding me??  Then he said that we were using too much soap and that the soap companies say to use too much so they can sell more.  The directions on the machine told us to use whatever the soap directions say.  After he told us this he then said that these machines are only made to last 4 years.  They said they would have some out to fix it in about 2 weeks.  So I guess we will have to use the laundry mat to do laundry until then?!?!?!  what a load of garbage!!!!! We bought the Kenmore because they are supposed to be good appliances right?!?!?!

Hi jyferguson-Welcome to MySears! I am sorry to hear of the trouble you are having with your washer.  How old is the machine, now?  Did they technician say what is wrong with it, at this point?

Sounds like the technician who came out gave you a bit of misinformation.  The Kenmore line of machines should last much longer than 4 years.  There are quite a few community members who may want to chime in on this, too, but they are certainly made to last.

Hi iyferguson sorry your experience has been less than extraordinary. In an effort to help could you please include the make, model, and date of purchase?

With that info we can be of better service to you!

One other bit of information that would be helpful: what kind of detergent have you been using?

I'm looking at buying one, why does the kind of detergent matter?

If it's not HE detergent, the suds can cause damage that results in loud noises.

What's HE detergent?  I heard you should stay away from scented detergents with Front Loaders; is that true?

Scent makes no difference. Suds make a difference. HE detergent doesn't make suds, and the package will have the oval "he" logo on it.

I use tide HE in my HE4t and still get the suds code!!

I have heard of so many problems with the newer front load washers, I don't want to buy a new machine. I will try and keep my old one running.

Cars continue to have recalls, and they've been around for over 100 years. Conventional top-load machines continue to have recalls, and they've been around for as long as most of us have been alive, if not longer. The only reason front-load washers and HE top-load washer problems make news is they cost more. There aren't more problems with them versus any other kind of washer; they just cost more (which becomes less and less true as time goes by), and people make more of a fuss when they have problems with something that cost twice or thrice what they're accustomed to spending on something. Today's front-load washers are great machines, and nothing to be afraid of.
