GE Profile 22.2 cu. ft. French-Door Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator —

We've had our GE Profile 22.2 cf French-Door refrigerator for about a month now, and here are my observations:

The good:

  • It fits in the limited space we have a available.  This was the primary reason we chose this model.  Very few french-door refridgerators are less than 35" wide.
  • It looks great.  We chose the white, and with the ice and water dispensers inside, the exterior looks clean, uncluttered and brightens up our kitchen.
  • The interior is well-lighted, and the controls are easy to access and very easy to use.
  • It is relatively quiet.  The icemaker is almost completely silent, a nice change from the clunker we previously had.
  • Both the refrigerator and freezer compartments cool well and appropriately.
  • Electronic features, such as the open-door alarm and the quick-temp (to restore the temperature quickly after the door has been opened for an excessive time) are nice.
  • All shelves can be adjusted, all pull out, and our model includes a shelf that splits and folds under to allow for extra-tall items when necessary.
  • The door shelves are enormous and very practical.
  • The cold water dispenser (on the inside left wall in front of a vegetable bin) is very unobstrusive and works without splashing or dripping.

The bad:

  • There is somewhat limited allowable variation to the shelf placements.  The bracket that holds the shelves extends down to the vegetable bins, but shelves can not be placed in the bottom two slots. The placement of the utility drawer creates a space on the shelf beneath that is very limited in height and visibility.
  • The large sliding drawer in the freezer has slipped off its track a few times, and a portion of the plastic sleeve on its track has broken off.
  • The freezer's bottom wire compartment has a slanted rear that creates a somewhat significant amount of unusable space.
  • The position of the control panel intrudes down into the upper shelves sigificantly, so that placing or removing anything up there requires you to tilt the items and maneuver them to the rear.

Summary:

I think the good outweighs the bad for this model.  We've never owned a large appliance that we considered perfect, so we don't expect that level of quality.  I'm sure that with a larger space to work with and another thousand dollars spent, we could own a refrigerator of  better quality and far greater practicality.  However, considering our space limitations and the price we paid for this unit, we're fairly happy with our choice.   Of course, it's been less than a month - so let's see how this refrigerator fares throughout the year, especially the freezer compartment's drawers.  I'll update this review if anything significant crops up.

We have this refrigerator (did not buy from Sears, and I regret that!), and the extended warranty we got from another company is a nightmare! We have been fighting them since january 2010 about food loss, lack of cooling, fridge/freezer warming up and they continue to remove parts and replace them but still not working today!!! Be careful with GE products, but if you buy, PLEASE GET extended warranty from Sears!
