LockedIs your refrigerator running?

Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you to go catch your refrigerator if it's running! Over Christmas I had a family member lose ALL power in their house. Actually, the entire neighborhood was out! They ended up buying a generator to power a couple rooms in their house. It worked out... until the generator broke. They went out to purchase a 2nd generator only to return and find the power back on! Needless to say, I never would have thought to keep a generator around for these kind of situations but it seems like a great idea. Do you keep one around?

It's a good idea.

But, you'd have to have a rotating supply of "fresh" gas to operate a gas engine run generator.

This would mean either a siphon system for your car (stay away from the neighbors' cars :) ) or a regime of filling a spare can (or more) of gasoline and rotating aging fuel into the car to be used, while refreshing the can(s) at the gas station.

Or, acquiring a propane-powered generator.

A word of caution, if your generator makes any appreciable amount of running noise, you will discover "friends" you never had before, coming to your door.

For around $2,000.00 plus installation you can get a 8000 watt natural gas/propane one that is hard wired into your house & will come on automatically when the power goes out. You'll pay close to half that for a portable gasoline powered one that you have to run cords to, deal with the gas issue, and figure out where to store & operate it from.
