My old Genie Blue Max was 18 years old and finally gave out. So I thought I could repair it, but no repair parts were available anymore. So I thought I would stick with Genie and purchased a Genie Garage Door Opener 1/2 hp DirectLift Screw Drive. I am a handy person and thought that Genie would use some of the same brackets and I was correct. I was able to install the track using the old track mount and the unit using the old angle irons as well.

It took a couple of hours to put the unit together using the picture instruction manual. Have a friend hep raise the track and unit into place. You have to make sure you mount the safety beam, it won't work if you try to by-pass it. The wall switch turns on the light independently also, which is a cool feature. You can also turn off the unit for vacations if you don't want it to open while you are gone. The old Genie pad on the outside of my door works with this unit as well.

I have a heavy door. It is a 2-car garage door with cedar......

I bought the Genie 2060 on 4-19-09 at ***** Bryan Tx for walk out the door price of $174. ***** installed it for $125. The lower closing switch failed within 6 mos. They repaired free. Within 18 mos. the system failed 3 more times. The last time it bent the rail because the lower limit switch failed for the 3rd time. That caused the auto reversing to fail causing the door to continue trying to close, bending the rail. On top of this, the push button closer failed and you had to hold the button down to close the door. It would cost more to repair than replace so I'am buying a new one but it won't be a Genie. The factory rep said I had a installation problem and the switch failure was my problem because of moisture and corrosion. The warranty was useless to me.
...

I personally installed a different brand over 25 years ago and it finally died. In the 25 years, not a peep from the unit and it worked flawlessly all during that time. That was then, this is now. I replaced it with this one and had Sears do the installation. Since its been installed, I've had nothing but trouble from day one. Limit switches are a pain, the installer didn't do a good job so they kept moving. Now, the door is at a point where it only operates when it wants to. It'll go up, and then never go down no matter how many times you push the button. (manual or remote) I then have to unplug the unit, use the manual lever to "unhook" the door and then after doing this a couple of times, it decides to work again. I've only had the unit 6-months and I'm already talking about replacing it. All that money out the window.
...

I did some research online and in Consumer reports. I settled on the Genie because it had the feaured I wanted (price, two remotes, quiet) at a great price. I paid for installation and everything went just fine. We've had the garage door opener for 6 months now and my only complaint is that the remote tumbles out of the clip that holds it to the visor...which can be distracting when pulling into your driveway.

I would recommend this door opener to a friend any time; it's a great deal for the price.
...

I think that this opener is over rated. It is the loudest, screaming opener I have ever heard. My wife is an extremely light sleeper, so this is the wrong opener. our bedroom is not even over the garage, and we can hear it too well. It also is the most unreliable opener. half the time, I have to push the remote/clickers 10 times! Standing in the driveway! The safety sensors will get nocked a tiny bit. Thats normal, right? Not for a Genie. It wont even close when this happens. And don't even try realigning them. I do not recommend this unit to anyone garage attached or not....

This opener is smooth and quiet. I like the homelink feature because my car has homelink and I do not need a remote in it. Installation was easy enough but I was disappointed in the lack of power. I had to get new door springs for this opener to be able to open it. It can only lift 20-25 lbs. The old Craftsman could easily lift twice that or more....

Over the years I have installed 4 of these Genie garage door openers in various homes we've lived in. The screw drive is far superior to chain drive with none of the herky-jerk of the chain and less noise to boot. This latest Genie's instructions were not as good as earlier ones. Double check position of the open and close door stops on the rail before operating....

I have this opener and am very pleased w/ it. To Leah, the other poster, you need to use a broom handle or similar item and press the manual release up (the part that the string is attached to). Then press the wall button once to close and again to open. This will engage the screw into the proper place. I am sure this will fix the problem then you will love this item....

I went to Sears wanting to buy 2 garage door openers. I wanted them screw driven because they are more silent then chain ones. Well they where out of the craftsman version of it so I bought these. The construction of the metal links looks very well made. The instructions where fairly easy to follow, just make sure you use the locking clip as you are connecting the main beam. The unit is not as quiet as I hoped but it is quieter then the chain link ones I have heard. I just installed these units this past Saturday so I cant comment on riability yet. I cant compare them to other garage door openers because this is the first time I install them, I just closed on my house last week. I will keep ya posted if I do have an issue....
