LockedJanuary's birthstone is Garnet

Well it's the start of another year of birthdays and birthstones. January's birthstone is Garnet.

Back in the day, garnet was thought to ward off nightmares and evil spirits as well as spark creativity and dispel anger.

Any January babies out there with a recent burst of creativity? : )

Sure.

I think the earrings and pendants are so pretty...and there are great rings too. Have a look and see if you see anything you like...

Although, I am not a January birthday, garnets are one of my favorites!  Love the red for a ring or bracelet, especially.

I am a January baby!  I love garnet jewelry & wear it very often.  I wear lots of rings & bracelets, not much of a necklace person, but love the garnet rings, especially!

I love the deep red color of garnet and I especially love that it's one of the more afforable gemstones.  I have a garnet ring I got in Alaska which has a totem pole theme and I get a lot of compliments on it.  I had no idea of its interesting history though.  Thanks for the info, I enjoyed reading that.

Yeah the stories and meaning behind alot of these stones are pretty fascinating.

A little more info for the Jewelry Buffs and the Curious alike:

Garnet was thought to give its wearer guidance and illumination at night. Travelers carried the gem to protect themselves on their journey.

It's fun stuff to follow....there are stones that were believed to help with everything from intoxication to marital problems! : )

What's unique and interesting about garnet - most people don't realize it comes in a rainbow of colors from purples to greens!... but I'm with Paula I love that deep red tone where at a glance you know it's Garnet.

But wait!  Garnets come in many colors!  They are not just red! Red is just the most common.

thanks for the link by the way!

And the star garnets from Idaho are available with either 4 or 6 rays, very unusual.

Those are beautiful!  I saw them on one of those treasure hunter programs on the Travel Channel recently and loved the unique pattern.
