Kenmore 11,500 BTU Slider/Casement Air Conditioner —
I purchased a portable air-conditioner a couple of years ago and while it cools the bedroom nicely it never quite cooled the living/dining area, which is a continuous space separated by an archway. Some of my neighbors have casement air conditioners, and I noticed their apartments were cool and comfortable in the Summer. I was inspired to buy this unit due to a deferred financing and discounted-price offer and, most importantly, because of the record heat wave we're having here.
Although the product description is for a slider/casement window, I was able to fit it nicely (with a bit of ingenuity) in a steel-framed crank-out-style casement window. Total installation time took about 3 hours due to some trial and error. I installed it myself but was very careful when lifting the unit into place.
The unit looks good once installed and runs quietly. It cooled a two-room area of about 450 sq. ft. considerably in about 1/2 hour after being heated all day on the hottest day of the year. In researching other casement air-conditioners, it is one of the more-powerful units in its category and the 11,500BTUs appears to be a conservative rating.
I like having 3 fan-speeds although I only keep it on the highest speed in the heat wave we're having right now. Since it cools quickly, I can use the timer to save electricity by setting it to turn on shortly before I arrive home from work. It would be nice to have more control over air direction from the louvers, but I think doing this might end up restricting air flow.
The remote control means I don't have to walk across the room and reach through the blinds to change settings. Also, the digital numeric display and mode lights are easy to read, however adding functionality to display the current room temp after making adjustments would be a nice touch.
In conclusion, this is a very good unit which looks nice, is quiet and cools a larger space quickly. The only reason I subtracted a star is because I believe a more-universal installation kit would have made for an easier installation in my window type.
