I have had 3 humidifiers prior to this one from Kenmore and have been super happy with them. Almost cried when the last one died out out wear. This new 12gallons is deceiving, it's the output not volume capacity to hold water. The construction is very poor, the plastic wellds for the water tank are very rough, not even and the tank is kind of cocked. The water tank fill up is on the side and makes it almost impossible to fill up unless you fill it in your tub or have a big bathroom sink. As the water level goes down and the resevoir tank releases water, it sounds like a toilet being flushed and will wake you up in the middle of the night 5-6 times depending on fan velocity. I could careless about the inaccurate humidity digital reader, but I do care that the fan speed 2 died after 2 weeks. I am not returning it, because I threw out the box and I'm not carrying this mini R2D2 back to the store. I am upset and disappointed with the construction quality and very poor design. I am a big...
...

Would and did recommend this product. It's very quiet (we have it in our living room very near our television and it does not interfere with the tv at all. We noticed an almost immediate difference in air quality in our home. We have a 1300 sq ft house, set this next to a cold-air return as instructed and it is wonderful. Bought this in desperation in the midst of two raging sinus infections, our furnace humidifier took a poo. Looks like an oxygen tank my grandmother used to have, but who cares! This thing is wonderful.

I acknowledge and gently but firmly rebuff the former complaints regarding quality and usability of this humidifier. We found it to be quite easy to fill at our kitchen sink. I think perhaps it would require being particularly intellectually challenged to not be able to figure out how to fill this up easily. We have the humidity set at 45 and it needs to be refilled once every two days or so. A small price to pay for so much comfort. No more static, cat doesn't shock us......

This humidifier is easy to operate and fill. It effectively humidifies the air in the whole house making it more comfortable in the winter. I set the fan speed on Automatic with my programmed humidity level during use. At first if the humidity is low it will run on HIGH until it reaches the programmed humidity level. It is a little noisy but that's temporary. (It's a high speed fan..what would you expect?) Once your programmed humidity level is reached it automatically turns on and off (at lower speeds) to maintain that level of comfort. Like I said... It's easy to operate, easy to fill and very effective in my one story house....

I just have to say, I tried 5 different brands, sizes, and types of humidifiers to moisten my 2500+ sq. ft. house before finally deciding on this one. None of them could get the humidity past 40%, which I know for some is fine, but not me. I have chronic sinus infections and severely dry nose in winter, and it takes a lot to make me feel better (whine)! I was BLOWN AWAY when 30 minutes after I took this thing out of the box, which took me about 5 minutes to setup, this humidifier was showing 70% humidy!!! I was very pesimistic, but I have a very accurate humidistat meter and it read 68% in the same room....YEAH! I followed the instructions and placed it next to a cold air return for WHOLE HOUSE humidication and cranked it on high. To be fair I gave it a few hours and checked the humidy on the completely opposite end of our large house, and the humidistat read 60%!! This is by far the best humidifier I have ever owned, and one of only a few products I've ever purchased that did...
...

I have had the unit for two months and the fan speed higher than F2 is too noisy to be practical. It does humidify the air, however, the filter design is such that after few uses and cleaning cycles the filter becomes too soft to support itself. A better design would have a supporting detachable part to place over the installed filter to maintain its shape as a cylinder. When the filter is not firm or stiff to maintain the shape of a cylinder the unit becomes less efficient and the fan has to run on its highest speed with unbearable noise. A detachable filter retainer would add significantly to the unit's value and utility. The alternative is to change filters every month which makes it expensive.

We own three of these. The first two worked great for 5+ years. The new one, bought last month, leaks. Keep reading until the end.

It has a bad tank lid seal. Leaks all over the floor unless you tighten the lid up so tight your wife and children can't get it off when they try to refill it.

Taking it back. Keep reading until the end.

Recommendation to others who might want to buy one . . . Take the tank out of the box and check the tank lid seals. There should be an outer rubber ring seal and and inner round foam seal. The outer rubber ring seal is either there, or it isn't. But, if the inner round foam seal is installed off-center, it will leak.

Can't really rate it any better when it leaks. But, if the seals were installed properly, we would rate it 5/5.

Sears can do better.
...

jbop12 says "Kenmore Model 15412 is quiet, easy to use and takes less space" about Kenmore 12 Gallon Humidifier

Our older unit Kenmore Model 758.144170 (14 gallon capacity) had one of its fan making too much noise after 8 years of service. So a new unit was looked for and due to its sleek and smaller but different design, Kenmore Model 15412 was purchased. It has quieter operations (especially at Whisper mode). The set-point selection for humidity level is easy and 5% per level change is reasonable and quick to select. A good point of this unit is that the room humidity level could be viewed on the display since the sensor is built into the cord. Changing and filling the water is a snap. Just position the bottle under the sink's tap and fill. The bottle is about 5" - 6" high and so it fits easily under our sink like the old Kenmore model's bottle. Since there is only one bottle, it may take once or twice daily filling. It is light-weight and easy to dismantle for cleaning - a big difference from the old Kenmore humidifier. One caveat of this unit is its expensive filter. Our old unit needed 2 filters...
...

This would be an above average humidifier if not for the crappy filter. Instructions say to replace at least once a season. How about once a MONTH or more. Dries out on top quickly and won't wick water above the water line. Solved that problem by purchasing an $11.00 submersible aquarium pump and wrapping the tubing around the top of the filter after putting several holes in it. Makes a totally different humidifier out of it. Is keeping the house at nearly fifty (50) percent with no problem. Fan actually shuts off once in a while. Come on, Sears, lower the filter price. It's only worth about half of what you're charging for it.
...

dpasquantonio says "Fine, But Filling It Is A PITA" about Kenmore 12 Gallon Humidifier

This unit provides adequate humidity. Don't think that it HOLDS 12 gallons -- that's its output. It holds much less than that -- and that's fine if you keep the unit on a low speed and don't mind filling it every few days in dry conditions.

So, filling it is an issue. The cap is on the side of the unit. If you want to fill it by laying the tank on its side and pouring pitchers of water into it, then filling it is pretty easy. However, if you want to fill it by holding it under a faucet or spigot -- be warned.

The unit won't sit properly, and the faucet won't accurately fill the unit, with most sinks. If you want to fill it under the spigot in your bathtub, it's okay, if your tub has a lip or edge on the wall with the spigot, and you'll have to hold the unit, which can get heavy, as it fills. Then you'll have to use your other hand to turn off the water, and then grab and attach the cap, still with one hand while you hold the heavy tank. Or you can hold the tank and grab it with...
...

First I bought an ultrasonic humidifier and returned it after 2 weeks because it left a white residue all over everything in the room and I wasn't willing to buy distilled water and fill it everyday.

I then bought the Kenmore 12 gal. humidifier and I am glad I did. It does not need distilled water and it doesn't leave a creepy white film all over my furniture. It was easy to set up. The water reservoir is big, easy to fill and I don't have to do it everyday. The filter is easy to access so changing it shouldn't be a problem. It's a little on the big side, but it does the whole house so I can live with it....

I just purchased this unit and it is going back as soon as the snow quits here.

The tank is a two piece design and is glued together. What a terrible looking seam - how did this pass through quality control? This is what holds the water people!! You are asking for problems. Second, the fill hole is on the bottom. That makes no sense at all to have an escape path for water on the bottom on the fill tank particularly in my case where the cap on this new unit leaks. Good thing I have a rimmed baking sheet. So now we have both the quality control department and the design group asleep at the switch.

In my opinion it is very noisy considering the high price paid for this unit. I have no idea when the bottle runs dry since it is opaque and no indicator other than the light coming on after it is empty.

Unfortunately I will probably never know how it works because as soon as it stops snowing I am going to drain this thing, repack it and take it back.

Come on Kenmore, I bought this unit......

We owned an older version of this same 12-gallon humidifier and just purchased a replacement which we thought was going to be identical to what we had. We were very pleased with the older unit and used it annualy for 7 winter seasons without any issues so we were thrilled that the same unit is still available and still for a reasonable price. We are however quite disappointed in the downgraded quality of the newer model. Most of the plastic seams on the body of the unit and on the refillable side water bottle are jaged and sharp and look unfinished, unlike the older model we had. The new fan blades are plastic vs. metal like the old unit and the fan makes a funny clicking sound as it operates that is much more noticable on the lower whisper speed making it a bit noiser than the old model. The side water bottle cap doesn't apear to seal as well as the old one and we now have to be extra careful to be sure it doesn't leak all over our wood floor. We've decided to run this for a day......

I loved how easy it is to fill. Bought the filters for it this year and am ready for the time I turn the heat on. Have recommended this to lots of folks and they have praised it's efficiency as well. I've had plenty of units...this one is the best! Used a bit of bleach in the water to keep any smells down...works like a charm.
...
