The REAL Scoop

4 star rating

Model 75151 is bulky and weighs over 100 lbs. I didn't have to worry about that though because the Sears Installation team handled the job flawlessly and even let me hover about without getting angry. Team was careful about my property and were clean. They took away my old unit. That was important to me. Installation is 5 star. Function - Performance. The unit is thus far as advertised. I discounted claims by other reviewers about the loud fan thinking they were exaggerating or had the fan on 'high speed'. The REAL scoop is that the fan is rather load at any speed. It will probably require you to turn up the volume on that TV or cordless phone if you are in the same room. The Energy saver function which turns off the fan whenever the desired temperature is reached and the compression turns off was one of the main reasons I chose this unit. The REAL scoop is the compressor keeps kicking on every few minutes for 20 - 30 seconds - along with the fan of course - which is annoying when sitting in the same room. An adjustment in the thermostat tolerance of a degree or 2 would fix this. The desired temperature is displayed in degrees. The controls, both manual and remote, are easy to understand and use. I hope you are reading this Kenmore. The unit is 15,100 BTU (not 15,000) and cools better than I expected. I don't need to turn on my bedroom AC in my 900 SQ feet house. The air vent louvers are a bit flimsy but they do work. I doubt that they will last with use. This AC is so efficient (EER is 11.0) it draws less than 12 amperes, uses 115 VAC vs 230 VAC, and still leaves you with an amp or two of capacity on that 15 amp receptacle. Any electrician will tell you when it comes to voltage, AC units are more economical on 230V but this unit still earns my GREEN stamp of approval. Functionality earns this unit 3 stars. Appearance. This unit looks good whether your looking at the front of it from inside the house or the rear end from outside. Kenmore's included installation kit helps here with low profile brackets. 5 stars for appearance. Maintenance - Warranty. This unit was a replacement for a Heat Pump unit I purchased in 1992. I kept my maintenance contract (Master Protection Agreement) updated with Sears and when my old unit finally died, they came through as promised and replaced my old unit - including installation, and removed my old unit without additional charge. Although the old unit was getting expensive to keep on contract ($100 per year), a five year contract for the new unit cost $155 and is in my opinion well worth it. You get an annual service-checkup with the contract at no additional charge. The only maintenance is a reusable nylon air filter (not a flimsy sponge filter) which can be easily cleaned with my sink dish sprayer. For worry-free maintenance and service this AC gets 4 stars. Value. At around $400, this unit gets 5 stars for value. My old unit was a top of the line at the time with an EER of 6.2 I expect this 11.0 EER unit to multiply my savings, lowering my electric bill and easily covering the cost of the maintenance contract.
