Very Good So Far

5 star rating

I have had this now for about a month and so far I am very pleased. It cools my 3-bedroom apartment with no problem, including an additional sun room. It is more of a semi-slow, but very steady cooling process, rather than the immediate icing you get from a non-Energy-Star model. Based on the reviews, I do worry that maybe I will be unlucky and it will die, but I am not going to lose sleep over that. First, forget their INCREDIBLY CONFUSING mounting instructions and just look at it with common sense. I DO NOT recommend taking it out of the housing as they instruct, but rather just stick it in the window as one piece (You may need help since it weighs about 100 pounds). I suspect that this will reduce the possibility of problems that others have posted here since you are less likely to damage the internals. I just made a home-made external brace out of two-by-fours. Buy something separately if the mounting stuff they gave you does not seem adequate or easy to install in your location. Second, I installed it without the side curtains since my window was barely bigger than the unit. I stuffed some foam in both sides and a form strip on top and got a great seal. Third, make no mistake about it: ANY 15,000-BTU unit will use an entire 15-amp circuit all by itself. I was blowing the circuit in this old house since there was too much on it. I had a new 20-amp circuit installed, with the appropriate new 12-gauge wire (I believe that is what gauge was installed). Fourth, it is reasonably loud if you were going to put it in a bedroom. I have it in a dining room, which is central to two bedrooms, kitchen and the living room. From that location, the noise is not so bad, since I am only in there when we eat dinner, and the noise is not overly noticeable in the other rooms. Fifth, based on the reviews, if your unit rattles or makes some other hideous noise, return it ASAP for a replacement. It should not make any noises other than the fan blowing. Lastly, keep in mind that an A/C does more than just cool, if dehumidifies, so the fans not blowing to the outer rooms is not a big deal. The cooling will get there, but more importantly, it will get the moisture out even if you don't think that room WAY down the hall is an icebox, it will be more comfortable.
