Kenmore 18.2 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator (6580) —

Whatever you do, don't buy a 18.2 cu. ft. top freezer refrigerator from Sears (ours was Kenmore model #77874).  We bought ours in March 2008 and it didn't even last 18 months!  Several weeks ago, it just stopped.  We called Sears in Ithaca, and they wouldn't service it because we hadn't bought the extended warranty (we kind of expected the refrigerator to last at least 2 years).  So  we called in the local appliance fixer, who told us he got "lots of calls" on this model.  He took it apart and showed us the problem - defective assembly, which resulted in a defrost wire making a hole in the evaporator coil.  The whole thing was dead.  Had to get a new condenser unit, which he installed - overall, it cost us more than $350!

I called Sears and they referred me to a unit that specializes in "products that break too soon" (seriously).  After talking to two women who indicated Sears would likely do something for us, I got the last woman, who said I was out of luck because I didn't get the extended warranty.

So, we've bought our last appliance (or anything) from Sears.
