Kenmore 18.2 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator w/ Factory-Installed Ice Maker —
This unit deserves 5 stars for it's efficient features, overall appearance, and value. I paid $529 + $65 delivery. The price dropped by $10 after I bought it.
There are 4 adjustable solid (leak proof) plastic door bins that easily hold gallon containers. The dairy bin is fixed in place and has a lip to prevent rollouts but will not catch leaks. The less expensive model I compared it too had wire shelves and this model has leak proof glass shelving, nice. Two of three shelves are adjustable. The meat/cheese bin is clear plastic and shallow (about 5 inches), attached to the left underside of top shelf. The interior plastic is lite, ok it's downright cheap, likely won't hold a large watermelon or heavy crockpot.
Now I will say it's noisy when it's producing ice (mind you, not the actual ice dropping) and I wouldn't want to sleep nearby. The other inexpensive unit I considered did not have 'noise reduction' technology and I can only imagine how much louder that could be. Aside from a periodic clunking sound and the sound of spraying water during ice production the sound is that of a fan blowing continuously, not too bad a sound though. The unit replaced was a 1993 Kenmore Wide by Side with icemaker/water center, definitely a higher end model. It was quiet - still runs great - I only replaced it to donate it to good will while it's still working.
The referigerator comes with a $5 water hose. I asked the installers to use my existing copper tubing and they declined. I hooked it up after they left. They told me Sears prefers the plastic hose now, though the owner manual clearly states use copper tubing. Otherwise, the guys did good work, actually removed my kitchen door rather than take the chance of banging into it and they were fast and gave a good feature presentation. They called twice the day of delivery, to see if I would like to have delivery early and again as a courtesy to let me know they were 5 minutes away.
I'm happy with this purchase and installation. If I had kids at home I would have gotten another wide by side with an ice/water center but this smaller no frills unit is suitable for lite use by one or two people who will take care of it.
