Have gone through three of these units in less than eight years. They work to a point. After about 1.5 years they will leak. Fitting come loose. O-ring seals go bad. PVC motor housing develops cracks. You will find yourself running to Sears for replacement parts. You will think you have corrected the problem only to find that another one will develop in a very short time.
Please DO NOT waste your money like I did. Get a good machine.

So True!
I installed this softener a year ago in San Antonio and have been very pleased with it. I am a mechanical engineer and did a lot of research. One thing I learned from trying to repair the old Kenmore water softener was that high water pressure can be hard on the valve and motor. I found that the "Cadillac" brands insist on installing a pressure regulator to keep the pressure around 60 psig so I installed one as part of my new installation (line pressure was 90)..
In a year we have only used 4 bags of salt. I like the way the latest models measure the water flow to total it for regeneration. ...

Water spots on faucet are gone, skin feels softer and it takes longer to get the soap off when showering, plus the dishwasher gives more sparkling dishes with the softer water.
We bought this softener after researching all brands. We replaced a 15 year old unit that needed new resin beads and just decided to upgrade for llttle more than that cost. So happy we did. It was easy to install and worked immediately after first charge. Water is very soft and all our sinks and toilets never stain like they did before. Also this unit uses approximately one third of the salt as our old unit. This unit is also very quiet. We never hear it recharge. This unit came complete with all parts needed to install. All is needed are an electrical outlet and a small drain hole.
Pro: ... it work with no problems
Con: none
The other : after 6mo, used like 3 bags of salt for 2people house hold. i have to add Iron out to mine. would recommend to test your water to find out what in it.
The water softener works fine, although I have only had it for 2 weeks.
I had a PEX pipe rough-in for a water softener installed in a new home. With the proper supplies it should have been an easy install. Unfortunately the contracted installer didn't have any adaptors from PEX to PVC. After a week of looking they said they had found what they needed. It was an all day ordeal to install. Even though my builder brought me 2 PEX to PVC adapters he chose not to use them. Instead he used his own PEX adapter to a copper fitting to PVC. It works okay but it seemed to me more than was necessary...
read full review »I purchased this softener about a year ago and it is working as planned. I did have to purchase another pvc fitting for the back as the threads on one of the original pieces got stripped. I was able to install the softener myself in around 2 hours. Some negative review people seem to think that the store associates are plumbing contractors and not retail store associates. If you have a specific question, ask a real plumber, not a kid making minimum wage. That being said, installation was failry easy and I now have softer water (I live in a rural area).
I purchased a pre-existing home four years ago that had a GE softener in it that never worked. I purchased the Kenmore 300 in hopes that it would fit. The installer, my dad, said, "don't worry about what type you buy. No matter what, we'll have trouble installing it." Which is pretty much par for the course when it comes to those things. However, he had no trouble installing once the old unit was drained and removed. The Kenmore is doing a wonderful job of keeping out water soft, and it was easy to program and is easy to use. I waited until it was on sale, and it ended up being $100...
read full review »The issues came from the installation of the unit. I went to the store to make the purchase and asked very detailed questions of what was an obviously untrained employee. I am not accutal sure she knew what the appliance was used for. I asked why I should upgrade to the next model and she said it was more efficient and used less salt and water. I asked how it could do and that she referred me to a brochure I had already read, she had no clue. Then asked if I could just install it in the same space as my old Culligan model, was it the same height for the connection and did it come with...
