How do you know which softener to buy?

posted on February 06, 2010 at 10:19AM Inappropriate? Quote Reply

Our water is hard because of the excess calcium.
It plates out on shower heads and leaves white spots everywhere water dries.
I took the water to the pool supply and they verified the high calcium content.
How did the others here figure out which model to purchase?
I looked in the product description looking for a water softener with sensors that do regens based on water output quality but could not find enough detail in the product descriptions.  The nearest Sears is about 50 miles from my home and I do most of my shopping online.  Do you guys have any suggestions?  Thanks

Rule of thumb:

  1. any softener is better than nothing
  2. you can't get one that is "too big"

Your "high calcium content" should have been give to you in a "grains per gallon" (gpg) unit of measurement. If you have the following gpg, then get the corresponding model below. A softener will also take care of up to 11 ppm of clear-water iron:

Gpg     Model     ppm iron

1-9     300     7

10-14     350     9

14-20     370     11

over 20     420    11

Honestly, though, don't waste your time on the entry level 300 model: the resin capacity is so small, you will find it regenerating more often than the others, wasting your water. Don't buy based on cheap initial price only to pay more in the long run in higher water bills. Go for the model 350 or higher.

If you have more than 6 people in your household, or if you have larger 1.25" plumbing (instead of the standard 1"), then get the model 370 or 420.

The larger the capacity, the less often it has to regenerate, saving you salt, water, and energy.

Eb, here is a "copy and paste" for a Kenmore water softener model comparison guide. If you need to convert Grains/Gallon to Parts/Million, multiple the grains by 17.
