Kenmore 5,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner —
Before buying this unit, I had a Frigidaire 5,000 BTU air conditioner. Because of my small window size, I needed something really portable. Unfortunately, I wasted my money on the Frigidaire first when I should have bought the Kenmore.
Besides the Kenmore being cheaper, it's overall a better unit. It's cooler and much more quiet. Ok, yes the Frigidaire has a digital display, temperature settings, timer settings, 3 fan speeds, etc, but it doesn't do that good of job cooling. It cycles it's compressor, so when it's on, the air coming out is freezing (5-10 minutes), but when it's off (5-10 minutes), the air coming out isn't cool at all, basically negating all the cooling it did. The Kenmore has consistently cool air, even though it too cycles it's compressor. It might not be freezing cold, but it's consistently the same cool temp whether the compressor is on or off, so it cools much more efficiently and effectively.
I'm also always concerned about the noise my unit makes OUTSIDE of my apartment, as I don't want to disrupt my neighbors. The main reason I got rid of the Frigidaire was because outside, it made way too much noise. Besides the usual noise of an air conditioner, it would clink and clank, whereas the Kenmore has a very subtle and monotone hum.
Another difference between the two units, is that the Kenmore has some sort of drainage. For some reason, the Frigidaire didn't really have a very reliable way for the water to drain, which meant that I had to pull it out of my window and tip it in order for the water to be drained properly.
The ONLY thing that could make the Kenmore unit better, would be for Kenmore to include some sort of air deflector. While many people praise that this unit has upward facing vents, I would have preferred them to be forward facing. I would have purchased another model with forward facing vents, but this was the only one that would fit my window. I purchased a plastic air deflector and some double-sided tape at my local hardware store, threw it on the unit, and now it's even more amazing.
The Kenmore unit is far and above the best little unit I've owned. It's simple, easy to install, and works great. I got this unit to only cool off my bed area while I sleep, however, it actually does a pretty decent job of cooling off my entire apartment, which is about 800 square feet, way above what it's rated for. And for the price, 5 stars all the way.
