Kenmore 5,300 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner —
I've had this a/c unit for just three days and I'm pretty disappointed. When I left my old apartment I couldn't bring along my old, inexpensive 5000 btu a/c, which had been performing flawlessly good cooling, easy to install, QUIET. The only way you knew that that unit was on was by feeling the cool draught. This Kenmore does a decent job cooling but is extremely loud for its size. Every time the compressor kicks in there's a loud rumble and then a pretty loud, consistent hum. After a while, the loud hum does become background noise but that means I can't use the Energy Saver function if I'm trying to sleep. With that feature enabled, each on/off cycle shocks me awake. When the unit turns off, the absence of noise is just as shocking as when it comes back on. It's similar to having roommates who come and go constantly, slamming the door behind them.
From a design standpoint, this unit is also lacking. My old a/c had built-in handles at the top and sides, which was a great help when lifting it in and out of the window. This Kenmore has no grips at all, and it's heavier. The side curtains are laughably short, extending about 5" on either side. Another mysterious design flaw is some small ridges on the bottom of the unit, making it impossible to sit flat on the window sill. The unit keeps tilting forward, making it extremely difficult to create a seal with the window.
I never realised how well designed my old a/c was until I had to deal with something as badly designed as this. Sears would take it back if it were in its original packaging, but I had to cut mine up in order to get the a/c out of the box (again, no grips with which to lift the thing). In fact, when I tried to get my hands below the unit for leverage, I ended up cutting my fingers on the exposed gills. Sorry to bring my old a/c up again but that one was inexpensive while this Kenmore is just plain cheap.
Now that the thing has been jury-rigged into my window I'll leave it there but I will probably donate it next year and get a new one. It was not at all a good buy. I'm very surprised at all the good ratings here.
