Hondaddy says "will work well for only a year or two" about Kenmore 50 Gallon Tall Natural Gas Water Heater

These water heaters were redesigned a few years back. They feature more safety... but these changes in design cause more service calls and cold water. The closed/restricted air intake to the combustion chamber will begin to snuff out your pilot. It'll happen a couple times a month... before you know it, it'll be 3 times a day.

When your unit gets a few years old, and you start having this problem email me.

Hondaddy at Hondaddy dot com . They have some problem with me using my normal actual email.

,I will send you some info on how to get it back right without having to pay for an unnecessary service call.

When it works right, it works well. But in a year or three it'll get finicky. But I have your back covered. Just let me know where to send the info.

I'm always glad to help, -tom2-
...

We started our research regarding purchasing an Energy Star Water Heater about one year prior to this purchase, because the one we had was over twelve years old and on its last leg.
Wanted a high efficiency Water Heater with a great warranty and company history, since there are only a few companies that make these heaters. It was somewhat interesting to find out which one, we stood with a good company that would stand behind its warranty. Sears did hit that list, second I wanted a respectful and trusted company which I found out made this Water Heater. Actually this was rated as one of the top three companies that made Water Heaters under the Kenmore brand.
This heater was very simple to install, and only cost an extra forty or so dollars for an extra necessary installation kit and a Monkey wrench which was available right from Sears.
It does weight around 160 lbs, so you might need an extra arm or two, however it was not that difficult to install. I also purchase a larger Water Heater......

It's wider than most other tanks, so it is a little harder to move into position! It is amazingly cool to the touch and we can do a load of dishes, laundry and still have water for a shower! If we are still in this house when this dies, I will definitely stay with Kenmore!...

This tank has had nothing but issues. 14 months after installation, I had to have the lighting assembly unit replaced. 28 months after installation, the tank now has a water leak that requires replacement. I did not elect to purchase the extended service plan and would highly recommend you purchase the plan....

I bought this one in Sept. '08 and installed myself. Perfect, No problems since. The best options available on a standard WHeater. Plenty of hot water always, I can't run it out.

I paid $424 + tax @ Sears 6 months ago and they wanted the same price on their website, but it looks like the price has gone way up on this since then....

I called some local plumbing companies and they all quoted me between $800-$1000 more than Sears was charging! I couldn't believe it, and none of them would budge on their quote. I went with this water heater after the reviews and talking to the person on the phone. This is a solid water heater that is 2" wider than most (remember this to make sure you have the space!). Sears contracted the install with a reputable plumbing company and I had it installed the next day within 2 hours, all of this cost me under $800 whereas other places were quoting me $1700-$1900. So far very pleased with the product and the installation....

I did extensive research on water heaters before I chose the Sears Power Mizer 12. The specifications were quite impressive. It took me 2 hours to drain and disconnect the old water heater and install the Power Mizer. The one thing I noticed immediately was it was cool to the touch even when it's heating water. This is the result of 2" of insulation. They even give you pipe insulation and insulation for the pressure relief valve. The recovery time is excellent. I didn't use Sears installation but it was the most reasonable of prices I got from local plumbers before I decided to install it myself. Sears was between $200 to $500 less. I live in Long Island....

I had been going down in the basement every morning to empty the bucket which was catching the drips from my old water heater, so I had to go down this morning to look at my new Sears Power Miser 12 Water Heater. It's a thing of beauty.

There's 50 gallons of 140 degree water in that tank and yet when you touch the cobalt blue exterior it feels cool and smooth.

I love it.

Be careful, it's a bit bigger around than my old standard sized tank - that's the extra insulation but it could be an issue in a closet or tight fitting location.

But not in my basement - it's down there right now ready to give me hot water whenever I ask for it....

I would like to retract my previous review and replace it with a more positive review. I determined that the heater does in fact have two anode rods. One of them is combined with the hot water pipe and is thus not readily apparent. The other rod is plainly visible.

This model was advertised as having TWO large anode rods for protection against corrosion and long life. But when I received the unit, there was only one. It appears the manufacturer eliminated one anode rod as a cost cutting measure, and Sears failed to update the product description. The heater performs satisfactorly, but I wonder how much the lifespan has been reduced with one less rod? Final note: be sure to check for applicable rebates. I learned of the $35 installation rebate by accident....
