I purchased this unit 6 years ago and have always been happy with the amount of hot water it delivers. Recently the hot water decreased and I called Sears to report the problem since it was still under warranty (12 Years Limited Parts and Labor). Sears gave me an appointment within 3 days, and the technician came (at the end of the appointment time). He diagnosed the problem and made the repairs. The thermostats needed to be replaced. It cost me less than $150.00 (Parts and Labor) and I now have volumes of hot water again. I recommend this water heater....

Purchased this water heater in April 2005. Have had nothing but problems. Yesterday woke up to find it leaking all over master closet and bedroon floor. Of course Sears hot line was not open because it was the day after Christmas. When we contacted them today, we were told it would be several days before a tech could come out to check the tank at a cost to us of $75. If they determine that it is indeed the tank leaking (duh!!) they will order a replacement for us but it could take a couple of weeks to get. The 12 year warranty isn't worth the paper it is written on. Don't waste your money on this heater.
...

We've had the 55 gallon hot water heater for 3 weeks now and have had no trouble. Our furnace system for heating water was blocked, so we were getting no hot water pressure. I am pleased with the water pressure all over the house. Even in the furthest bathroom from the heater, hot water comes in a matter of seconds.

I'm also pleased with the consistency of the temperature of the water. The temperature remains constant. Previously we had spikes of super hot water. These spikes were not good for my preschool children. I am very satisfied with our purchase.
...

I purchased the tank for a GREAT price: less than $410 WITH tax- being a Sears cardholder helped a bunch! For now it works great. The water stays hot for the entire duration of my showers (sometimes 16 minutes or longer!!). Actually, a few Sunday's ago I washed a couple loads of laundry, ran the dishwasher, and took and shower in about a 3 to 4 hour span. Guess what? There was steam coming from all the faucets!! That would have never occured with my old tank!

The salesperson informed me that the Kenmore tank has a perpetual spiraling apparatus that eliminates any sediment from building up, which can decrease the tank's productivity and increase its power usage. I opted for the 12 year warranty because I want this to be the first and last tank I purchase for my home. So check back in 2023 to see how it worked out ;-)!!
...

Sears people are very helpful and friendly....

I was attracted by the energy rating and 12 year warrenty. I wanted the best affordable energy efficient water heater I could find. I looked at the $1500 price of the top brand and after weighing in the costs for installation and the fact the more expense one only had a 10 yr warrenty I just could not justify the higher cost. I bought the extra 5 yr labor warrenty which was offered. It was reasonable and has a yrly maintance with it which is cost effective. I researched for a year the differnet brands and was prepared when my water heater went up to make the best choice for me.
...

Awaiting repair since the water heater never worked properly. Gives about 7-10 minutes of hot water then it's warm, then cold. Raised thermostats, but still runs out of hot water. Most likey, the lower element isn't working: tried both 3800 and 5500 watt modes--no difference. The element is actually upside-down, when matching it with the drawing in the instruction manual. Perhaps dip tube is broken or detached, mixing hot and cold water.
...

We bought our home in 2002, the previous owners had purchased a new water heater from Sears in 1999. It was also a Kenmore Power Miser but in 2006 it began leaking and flooded our master closet and garage. We had Sears come out and we were happy to learn that the tank had been under warranty and it cost us $300.00 to have a new one installed. At that time we thought we had gotten off rather reasonably. However three and a half years later, another leaking tank and this time it cost us $375.00. New they are on sale for $430.00 with the same warranty. It makes me think Sears/Kenmore have figured it out that by selling them for under $500.00 they will make more than that in the 12 years they warranty the unit. Seems to me there is a problem with the tanks and they don't seem to want to investigate how to improve it. We need a new softner but I have decided not to take the chance with Sears.
...

i am against waranties, when the product has a 12 year limited waranty... well 2 years into it, the element burned out..i replaced them at a cost to me 55.00, the parts would have been free if i paid the service fee of 125.00. i am kinda ok with this, 3 1/2

years after purchase we need to go push a red button to be sure we have hot water. it is overheating now, well i can again pay 125.00 to have a tec come out or replace the thermostat, which i can also do myself. well stupid me for spending 400 + dollars on a 200 dollar water heater. because it is a piece of **** if you dont pay more to have it covered completely.

I purchased this water heater in May 2004. It began leaking in September 2009. I was hoping for at least 10 years of usage with this unit. I'm disappointed and will look for a replacement that will not be a Kenmore. Appears they simply don't make them like they used to.

Update October 2009: I will now eat crow. I did end up replacing my bad water heater with the same Kenmore model (55 gal Power Miser 12).

As my previous post shows I was quite disappointed with the short life of my previous water heater. So, I did look around for other water heaters, I even looked at the new tankless models. I also went into the Sears store and talked with the sales rep. I opted to have a Sears tech come out and inspect the leaking water heater. The service tech was knowledgeable and courteous, a complete professional. The tank had simply failed and full replacement was covered under the warranty. I picked up the replacement from my local Sears and had it installed. It has been in place now for a few...
...

Then suddenly no hot water. I checked the manual. Hit the reset. Nothing.

$168 for twenty minutes of work to replace the thermostat.

The previous water heater in this house lasted 18 years without a problem. What has happened to reliability of appliances?...
