best value, efficiency, looks, but does rattle....

Kenmore 6,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner —

The good: We have bought 4 of these: (2) three seasons ago, (1) 2 seasons ago, (1) this season. The model is largely the same from one year to the next. They are very efficient air conditioners for 6k btu you get the cooling of an 8k+. They do not draw air from outside, but rather continuously re-cool the inside air, which is how all window air units should work, IMHO, but don't. The oldest ones we have still cool with their full power, no degradation. We leave them running pretty much constantly from june through august. The barrel fans are quiet and move air well. The air deflectors push the cold air upward-and-outward, not sideways, which is again just common sense design. The compressors are reasonably quiet after they have spun up to pressure after coming on. The controls work well, have not failed, and the remotes also work well. It's low profile in the window makes it look less bulky and obtrusive from the outside, and allows more glass to see out. For the longest time we were just running two of these upstairs and that actually cooled the downstairs to a comfortable level as well. Finally, they don't seem to generate as much condensation on the outdoor side of the unit. Maybe that's got something to do with the fact that it's recirulating internal air instead of constantly pulling warmed outside air over the unit's internals... The not-so-good: The plastic door and body skins rattle. On every one we've owned they do this. If it gets to be too bothersome we usually leave the front plastic door open, and that decreases the rattle somewhat. The newest two that we have do it the worst. We can see that this model has been slowly "cost-reduced" over the years....the compressors are *slightly* noisier, and the plastic skins rattle a *little* more, the adjustable vents are of a slightly thinner and different colored plastic. Although I have not tried this, it seems that it would be fairly easy to smartly locate some weatherstripping between the door and the skin to eliminate this problem (why wouldn't the manufacturer just do this anyway??). The other downside is that the control panel, being totally smooth to the touch (like the controls on a microwave) makes it nearly impossible to adjust the unit in the dark while it's running. I've accidentally shut off the unit while trying to bump down the temperature at night, feeling around for what I think is the right spot for a button. Then I have to sit up and wait 3 minutes to turn in back on as is the case with any a/c compressor to avoid damaging it. Again, maybe some drafting dots or some such stick-on would fix this. I guess I should try that..... All that said, on balance it is the most efficient low-cost to operate small window unit out there for room air conditioners in my opinion. It looks the best and runs the best, and even with the rattling it is still the least obtrusive of any window unit. It is one of the few units whose overall design is correct in terms of not trying to cool incoming air at 80 - 90 degress but instead re-cooling the inside air only. Even though it rattles, I've never owned a window a/c unit in my life that does *not* rattle, so... Finally, they appear to be extremely reliable, running for days on end for years. I would *not* buy the warranty on this one you'd be wasting your money.
