Kenmore 6,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner —
We needed a lighter weight unit for a second floor bedroom. Wrestling our medium sized one in and out every year was too hard, and it shut off every time we had a power dip. We liked the low-profile look and still don't understand why there aren't more of this type.
Officially, this AC is undersized for our room, but we face north and have very high quality windows so it does well enough. Yes, the front grill did start to rattle some, giving us a chance to play detective. A little foam or piece of felt solved the problem. We accept this as the tradeoff for an all-plastic unit, since the plastic is what makes it lightweight.
We had hoped it would be easier to take apart and clean than regular ACs. In a way it is, since Sears is great about including a tech sheet explaining how to get the thing apart. It's folded up inside a tiny plastic bag, which you can't get to until you've taken the front cover off. But you don't really need it for that. What you need it for is to get all the other pieces off so the "deck" can be accessed. That's where the dried muck builds up (especially if you're on a heavily trafficked street), and where most of the nastiness is.
We didn't get to clean that deep, because though the instructions say early on to remove the side curtains, they don't say how. The bottom part of this assembly is integrated into the plastic frame the unit sits in ... in others words, not like other ACs where you can just remove and toss the side curtains (and what they hook onto) if they break. Since you can only man-handle this kind of plastic so much without breaking it, we put off a deep cleaning until next year (which will hopefully be season three).
Removing the front cover gives you complete access to the evaporation unit in the front, and SOME access to the long sideways fan (unique to this model). But to clean the rest of the machine, you have to go through the elaborate task of removing the back cover ... AND a bunch of other stuff.
The filter isn't quite as easy to get in and out as other air conditioners we've had, but that's a very minor quibble. There's an outer plastic grill over the back, which looks better and offers some protection for all those little fins when it's in storage. Also the "built-in" side curtains are somewhat protected when they're retracted, compared to other units. The handhold insets on each side make moving it easy.
We're very happy with this little AC, and will buy another if we need one this size.
