Longevity is questionable

Kenmore 6,000 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner —

I bought one of these between 3 and 4 years ago. It did get heavy use during the summers; I installed it per the directions, I cleaned the filter regularly and did everything else I knew of to do for maintenance. Lately it had been doing a strange sucking or slurping sound while it was running, and I noticed the air flow was diminished even on high fan speed. I shone a flashlight down into the vent where the blower fan is, and discovered that the blower fan was moldy and disgusting. I took the front casing off and attempted to get to the fan in order to clean it. There is a motor shaft and the fan connects to that with a clamp and screw. However the metal parts are rusted and I cannot get the fan to come off. I can't really clean the fan properly without getting it out and away from the rest of the unit, as there is no clearance inside the unit. I'm getting frustrated since I can't get it apart to clean it, and I don't want to run it anymore with it moldy and disgusting. I'll probably end up throwing it away and getting something else. All in all I'm a little disappointed that I'll be pitching this thing after a few years, when the last unit I had ran a good ten years.
