Quickly makes a lot of ice

This was a replacement for a Maytag ice maker I previously owned. If your refrigerator doesn't make ice quickly enough for you, or if you simply prefer smaller cubes of ice, this ice maker will certainly fit the bill. Built-in filters give the ice a very clean, neutral taste. The only cons against the product is the higher cost than I would've liked to have paid, and the slightly louder motor when it's running, compared to my previous Maytag ice maker.

Not a good Choice

I have had three of these in 10 years of home ownership.  Yep 3, and all 3 have died.  First one died within the 1 year warranty.  Took it back and swapped under warranty.  Next One died about 2 years later, and I took it in under the satisfaction guarantee, and after much arguing with Store Management got it replaced.  Well the 3rd one, I have replaced the Ice Coils that melt the ice, the pump motor that pumbs the water, the pickup motor and device, and now I am being told by the repairman, that there is a freon leak and he thinks it is going to cost over $300 estimate to repair.  Paid like...

It worked fine for a couple years and then the compressor went out. It cost almost half of the original price to get it replaced. And now, several years later, it has died once again.

i would not reccommend this Kenmore Built-In 51 lb. Capacity Icemaker Freezer (8958) to anyone. it is really loud and it is not something you would want in your house. it is overpriced when you compare the quality and what it really does. you can find something that does the same for way less.

i bought this ice maker for our new home . the first week in our home i woke up to an extremely loud noise... so loud that i thought someone was breaking in my house...no kidding i jumped straight up in my bed. it was the ice maker. the random noises it makes are rumbling, springy, banging, and also clicking. the ice produces great -so far not a problem with that but the noises are the downfall of this product. my advise: dont buy it unless you can tolerate the noise! i have always liked kenmore products but this one i dont like at all!!

This machine is loud but FAST!!!

We use this at home. With many people coming, going we needed a machine that would be reliable and consistent. It has proven to be both. We have never run out of ice and have enough to loan to friends. Very happy overall and you get used to the compressor sound pretty quick.

KENMORE ELITE ICE MACHINE

I purchased a Kenmore Elite ice machine from sears and about 1 1/2 years later it quit working. My first mistake was the purchase. Second mistake was not purchasing an extended warranty. Took to be repaired and was told the evaporator was bad and would be $800 to fix. Put another couple hundred dollars toward a Hoshizaki ice machine. It will be worth it. Your just renting a kenmore at a high price for a short time.

Kenmore Ice-maker no Good

I'm very disappointed in Kenmore. I'm more disappointed in Sears. I purchased this ice-maker a year ago plus I puchased the extended warranty. When I called Sears for repairs. They sent out a repairman and he looked at the ice-maker and could not find a SN#. He declined to fix it. I called Sears back and they gave me the model number from my file but they said the SN# was listed as unknown. Well if they could not locate the SN# - How do they expect me to find it. Anyway to make a long story short. Sears called me and left a message that they cannot fix my ice-maker due to no SN# sticker. There... read full review »

Junk Machine

I've owned two ice makers from Whirlpool (1 Kenmore + 1 KitchenAide) for the last five years and neither has performed. Both machines are constantly broken and now I'm told neither justifies repairing. (Pump on one, evaporator on the other). Additionally these machines have a heavy electric draw and use about 50 Gallons of water daily. Bottom Line: This is not your choice for an ice supply. Do not make my mistake and waste $2500.

51 Pound Ice Maker

Purchased 51 pound ice maker in 2003. Had to immediately exchange 1st machine due to scratches and it not working properly. 2nd machine quit working after a month. Had repair Technicians out 4 times to fix/fill or replace compressor. Finally exchanged the 2nd machine after it failed again. 3rd machine has seen Technicians about 4 times to fill or replace compressor. Currently, machine is out again due to water pump failure.

Free-Standing Ice Maker

This item worked OK for five years, then one part after another started failing: PC board, condensor, compressor, evaporator, and getting the unit repaired is very difficult. First, the repair service contacts speak marginal English and are hard to understand; 2nd, parts are not delivered on time causing missed appointments; 3rd, one repair has required four appointments (so far) and the unit is still not repaired! It's doubtful I would replace this ice maker with another SEARS product.

great when it works

Our previous Kenmore free-standing icemaker lasted 26 years, so when it finally died, when naturally looked for a Kenmore to replace. We have had the unit approx. two years. While in warrantee, wires broke on the coil grid that seperates the cubes, and was replaced. Just out of warrantee, the pump failed-this pump alone cost over $200.00 and Sears wanted $150.00 to replace. Now the grid has broken again. Our unit is fed from an R.O. unit, so water quality is excellent, yet cleaning light goes on regularly, requiring emptying the bin, and running through heat cleaning cycle I suspect contributes... read full review »
