Yes, the sales person told me that to meet new energy requirements, the compressors on the new units run continuously. The old freezers, like the one that I had for 29 years, cycled on and off. I was also told that the compressor has to run like this because they had to put in SMALLER compressors, to meet the energy requirements. I asked that if the compressor was running all the time, did that not mean the compressor could go out sooner than older models (which were built with big, heavy compressors, built to LAST). He said 'yes', they would have a shorter life span, and that this is a major reason why Sears stopped offering a longer warranty period and went to a one year warranty. They knew that a repair would be coming down the road and compressors are not cheap. So, the comment about running away from a freezer with a energystar sticker could be very accurate.
