Kenmore Elite 36" Electric Induction Cooktop 4290 —
When I renovated my kitchen 6 months ago, I really waffled between choosing induction or gas. Everyone has gas, and induction is really a rare thing here in the US. I finally choose this cooktop, and could not be happier. I choose this cooktop over other induction models, mostly for price and the fact I could put 3 drawers underneath (utensil drawer & 2 drawers for pots & pans), which is a set-up I really love. The clearance requirements under the GE is something like 17 inches!!
The response of the hobs is unbelievable. Water boils before you can turn around. But, on the other hand, if your oatmeal is about to boil over, it calms down as soon as you decrease the heat, so it never boils over and creates a huge mess. You must do prep, like chopping onions before you turn on the heat, because it is that fast!
Some people complain about the noise. There is sometimes a very faint noise from vibration when it is on high, but it is less than the hiss of gas.
Another thing I was worried about was the ceramic glass top and how tough it would be to clean. This is a totally different product from radiant heat ceramic. The glass isn't heating up (besides from the hot pot), so any spill is super easy to clean. I haven't had to use a razor scraper at all. You can scratch the glass top by dragging the pots across it--I have a couple of small ones, but you can't really see them. I was worried that the glass top didn't have enough speckles on it to "hide" stains, but there are no stains because the food doesn't burn onto the top!
The size and location of the hobs has been terrific. I didn't think I would use that smallest size much, but it fits on my small saucepan perfectly.
The controls are very easy and responsive to use. I have had no problems with my fingertips not registering. There are about 16 different settings--1-9 plus P (extra power). The upper numbers also have a half setting which is signified by a dot (6,6.,7,7., etc) The low is unbelievably low and of course the P is super powerful.
I also love being able to put a linen towel underneath pots that will spatter so my clean up is even less! (This is a big people pleaser too--everyone is always most impressed with that).
I am more happy with this cooktop than I would have thought possible. It does an even better job than I ever dreamed.
