This was purchased for us as a wedding gift about 1.5 years ago. I had a few minor complaints about fitting larger bottles (like champagne), but otherwise was very happy with it. I liked the look of it, and it seemed to work great. 4-5 months after the warranty was out, though, it stopped cooling. The fan was running, but it just stayed at room temperature. I called sears and a repair man came out. He told me that the unit had a coolant leak and that the compressor had to be replaced. All total, the estimate to repair the unit was $799!! The thing cost $400 to begin with. I cannot...
read full review »This product was highly rated by **************** so I purchased it even though I saw negative reports on this site. For some reason I did not purchase the extended warranty. This unit always seemed to be running from the day I plugged it in but it did keep my wine at the desired temperature.
But then after 13 months the unit completely died. I had two different Sears repairmen tell me that it was not fixable. It would cost too much,I should just buy a new one. I sent an e-mail to Sears with my complaint and they did not even bother to respond.
I bought this unit on Dec. 5, 2008. At first it worked well. Then the dual temperature function started to waiver. It would not hold the selected temperatures in either the upper or lower chambers. i lived with it. Then, on October 14, 2009 the compressor went out. It was replaced under warranty. The new compressor worked fine until July 8, 2010. Sears service said there was a slow leak in the compressor line. They recharged the compressor under warranty. It's working now however, it still cannot hold the selected temperature. Each chamber wanders about 4 degrees up and down. Word to the wise, ...
read full review »We purchased this model in-store in December 2009. Although the unit is meant to be "freestanding," we were assured by the salesman at Sears that the unit could be semi "built in" as long as we left a few inches of space all the way around it for ventilation. Based on this information, we designed our new kitchen allowing space for the unit, plus an extra 3" on the top, bottom and back, and 2" on each side.
In June, 2010, the unit suddenly stopped cooling, and now we're told that it's probably because we didn't allow enough space for ventilation. We're taking it to a 3rd party for repair...
read full review »Purchased in December 2008. Failed some time in the summer of 2010. Got around to asking for a repairman to come out in early November. Estimated cost to repair failed compressor, $704.56!! (I paid $400 in 2008)
So we will be off to the dump someday soon. Sure, I could have opted for some sort of extended warranty, but who'd of thought that a Kenmore top-rated by **************** would 1) fail in less than two years and 2) be outrageously expensive to repair?
Have not, yet, approachd Sears on this issue.
I purchased my wine cooler in November 2009 and was happen until a two ago. I've had three services calls in a month. Finally, the last repairmen stated my cooler could not be repaired. He said Sears will call me to set-up a pick-up and replacement date. It's May and I am still waiting for a new cooler. I adjusted shelves for my wine and was happen. Yes of course, I did recommend this cooler to my friends. Sham on me.
Thank God for warranties...
Primary problem is temperature fluctuation. Upper zone (white wine) has a 5 degree temperature spread. Unit cools 2 degrees below set tem, and warms to 2 degrees above set temp before cycling (normal spread - 46-51 degrees). Technician called his advanced tech support, and after about an hour, it was determined that a 5 degree spread was normal.
I made it clear that the purpose of a wine cellar was to have consistent temperature, but it made no difference.
In addition, the compressor has a loud rattle when cycling off. Technician shook the unit, and it sounded better for one day.
The Wine Cellar works as advertised. It does not hold 38 bottles, but I expected that based on other review. The shelves are close together, so larger wine bottles will only fit on the top shelf.
The Cellar is very quiet and is nice looking. It is functioning very well so far!
My unit was dropped. The door did a faceplant out of the box, opening like a dishwasher. I'm hoping this is the exception, but I would recommend a through inspection. (If you're not sure, look for smushes or dents in the styrofoam shipping footprint.
Seems like a good product, and actually fits wine bottles reasonably well. You can fit more bottles than advertised, which is really refreshing. I brought a bunch of wine into sears, I was able to fit 9 chard (or 6 cab) bottles to a shelf, and think 14 chard bottles would fit in the top shelf. A long fetzer bottle and an oversized zinfandel (large...
read full review »So far, so good. Looks nice, seems to work pretty well. They really shouldn't say it's a 38 bottle fridge when it actually holds maybe 24 and you really can't fit Champagne bottles but I like it.
The cooler looks great and functionality is decent, but capacity is less than advertised and the cooling unit is garbage. I've had the cooler for just over year now and it has stopped cooling already! My $100 College dorm room fridge from 8 years ago works better. Kenmore should stick to making standard refrigerators.
