Kenmore Elite Premiere Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System —
I bought this unit almost a year ago, so I have a longer experience with this unit before doing a review.
Others talk about the specs, I'll talk a little more about the unit itself.
Because this is an under the counter set-up, you do need to have an access hole in your countertop for the faucet to come through. We have a new granite countertop, but did not need to drill a new hole. Our countertop had a hole in it already for a soap dispenser. We took out the soap dispenser and the faucet fit perfectly.
This particular RO system has a light on it indicating what condition the filters are in. When you push the knob on the faucet to get your water, the light blinks. Green means good, yellow means going to need to change filters soon, and red means change filters now. To me, this was worth the extra $100 over the other Sears RO system. The cheaper one did not have this feature at the time I made this purchase.
There are three filters to this system. Two of them are standard filters that need changed about once every 3 months or so, depending on how much water you use. The third filter is the RO filter (called the membrane), and it is VERY difficult to get a new one. You can only order it through Sears Telephone order system, and you have to speak to a representative so they can look up the number. It is such a hassle, that I ordered two RO filters so I would not have to deal with it for about 2 years. It is difficult and the one filter is expensive. It is $65 just for the RO membrane. The other two filters run about $35 for both, and they come as a set. You can buy these in the refrigerator department at any Sears store.
The filters are very easy to change. Also, I like that the filter case can be either standing on it's side, laying down or in any position. The cheaper one does not have this feature.
The water itself is GREAT!!
This is one of the only units that take the ammonia out of your water. Our local water has Cholormines, which is cholrine and ammonia mixed together. Other water purifiers would take out the cholorine, but not the ammonia. The ammonia can kill my fish, so I need a system that takes it out. I use this water not only to drink, but to water my house plants and to change the water for my beloved fish.
