Kenmore Progressive Canister Vacuum with Variable Power, Orange —
Here is an extensive analysis of Kenmore's Model 25812 canister.
A detailed breakdown of Kenmore's Model 25812 canister is provided. I have also compared it to other Kenmore canister models, some less expensive and some more expensive. This also covers why to you should purchase a canister over an upright vacuum.
Feature by feature, Kenmore's Model 25812 canister stands up well against the competition. In short, it does a great job of cleaning, it's built tough and will last for years.
Why should you buy a canister over an upright?
A canister beats out any upright for a number of reasons: You don't have to push around 20 to 25 pounds all the time. You can easily clean & reach under beds and couches since it's clearance is so low.
Canisters cost more because they use more metal which adds strength. Look at any upright like Hoover, Eureka, Kenmore or even Dyson. You find plastic, plastic and more plastic which wears and breaks. Overall, you get what you pay for. Canisters outlast uprights three or four times as long. And they clean better, too.
Why select this model? The Kenmore model 25812 has many options I like. I have broken it down by the following sections: Hose, Hardware, Power, HEPA Filtration, Plastic, Attachments, Electronics and Lights.
Hose: The eight foot hose can reach more of a room that the Kenmore model 25615's shorter six foot hose.
You don't have to drag/pull the canister around as much.
Even though I liked the 25615's white color, it's shorter hose was a disadvantage I would have to suffer with for years. (More on color later.)
Hardware: The aluminum metal extension wand is strong and is a step above the cheaper quality wand used on lower end Kenmore models 25513 and 26312. The swivel-motion construction on Model 25812 is a better quality design compared to the lower end Kenmore models 25513 and 26312. These lower end one use a piece of plastic to stop swivel rotation which will wear faster.
Power: Model 25812's powerful vacuum does an excellent job of picking up dirt. This means less time going over and over the same area. The variable power is a nice feature. I don't need to use full power when going over throw rugs. The bare floor feature disables the brushes and does a good job of cleaning dust on floors.
HEPA filtration: This model's two filters reduce re-circulation of dust throughout the room. One is a rectangular paper filter and the other is a cloth filter that keeps the dust mites in.
Plastic: Most of this model uses good quality, hard plastic. The only exception are the cheap access covers that may not hold up over time. They are thinner than expected. Time will tell.
Color: One reason to hesistate when buying Model 25812's is the orange-like Sedona color. Since this unit has all the features I wanted and needed, I forgave the designer for their terrible choice in color. Remember that most of the time this vacuum cleaner will be unseen, in a closet. When we are cleaning our home I will not be entertaining company. Your company will only see the fine cleaning results.
Attachments: Model 25812's three attachments are very handy and strongly designed. We also use the Power Mate Jr (now conveniently located inside the vacuum) to clean our couch cushions and the cookie crumbs hidden under the seats.
Electronics: The performance indicators really work and are a great guide when cleaning carpeting and to inform us when to change the bag. Upon inspection, the bag indicator truly shows the replacement time is at hand.
Lights: Two sets of lights are nice. The first is on the motorized-brush base cleaner which has a bright, wide beam. The second is built on the wand. The wand can be detached from the motorized-brush base. The wand has it's own light which is great when using the attachments: tight spots, couch cushions and un-lit areas. Lower end Kenmore models have fewer lights or none at all.
Note - Let's compare Model 25812 to Kenmore's higher level model Model 25914. The 25914's finger-controlled on/off buttons are enabled by pressing the membrane type buttons. Over time, these membrane buttons will wear out or can be damaged with a sharp fingernail. Model 25812's switches are more durable.
Overall, you will find the quality features of Kenmore Model 25812 are a step above the competition. If you can forgive the choice of color, you will have a dependable vacuum cleaner that will last for years.
