“Powerful carpet cleaner with significant flaws ...”
First, let's admit that it's difficult to find everything in a vacuum in this price bracket. This vac does a good job of cleaning carpets. It features a powerful motor with good suction and the upright form factor loads its weight on the main brushes, which is a winning combination. It is a fairly heavy machine that glides easily on its wheels (but is too heavy to lug for vacuuming stairs). Edge cleaning is very good as well. The hose and basic attachments provide good suction and the reach is above average. The HEPA filter devours the dust and it's a pleasure to use this vacuum on flat carpets. Now the cons, and they are significant: the sleek design of the machine and its components suggest the parts must be high tech because of the light weight materials. Unfortunately the main brush assembly and the attachments are made of cheap plastic. The attachments come apart too easily and you have to keep putting them back together while you use them. On other vacuums if the beater brush is ever jammed the rubber belt burns out for a $3 repair, but on this one the strong motor and belt overpower the construction of the brush assembly. If you sideswipe a doorway the mounts can break and burn up in a hearbeat and stores don't stock those parts ($43 by mail order). Unlike other uprights, the power cord is attached at the bottom of the main unit, just above the wheels. It is far too easy to run over the power cord, and you have about five seconds until those powerful brushes grind the insulation off down to bare wire. Useless on bare floors, this is a good carpet sweeper with marginal attachments for dusting. Kenmore and Eureka (the maker) both rate high so we had high expectations. We are pleased with the job it does on carpets but disappointed in its construction and durability. We have owned many vaccums from many makers... our first Kenmore cannister vac lasted almost 20 years, but we wanted the carpet cleaning power of an upright. Every upright we have purchased since then is good for about three years and that with some repairs, but they are usually routine belts, etc that you can buy in the store. On the other hand this one does a far better job of cleaning the carpets with less dust kicked up while using it, and that's what we bought it to do. I would not necessarily recommend competing brands in this price bracket, but buy this one for carpets, knowing its limitations, or else invest in a more expensive machine.
