When I got married and began to register for gifts, everybody raved about this mixer. I didn't see what the big deal was, but now that I own one, I will be raving to all of my friends. It does take up counter space, but you can get it in so many different colors that it will match your kitchen and look slick when on display! It makes cooking so much easier! You can use it for everything from whipping one egg white to making up a huge batch of cookies or mashed potatoes. I can't say enough good things about this mixer!
I original bought a "similar" Hamilton Beach mixer for $40 less. I used it once and took it back to the store, exchanging it for the Kitchen Aid mixer (which happened to be running a rebate on the Empire Red model, so I only paid about $10 more for the Kitchen Aid brand.) The Hamilton Beach mixer was SO noisy, it hurt my ears.
The Kitchen Aid mixer is great. I have wanted one my whole life, and now I know why you see so many chefs on cooking shows using these types of mixers. It's powerful, quiet, sturdy, and has the attachment capability.
Wouldn't trade it for anything!
I love this mixer! I use it at least once a day for everything from whipping cream to mixing pancakes or cookies to kneading pizza dough. I wonder how I managed five years without one. It seems very durable, although I have read that these newer models have plastic gears. I do find it hard to add ingredients without turning it off and lifting the blade, but I think if I used the splatter guard that has a chute on it ti woudl be easier, but I never want to clean an extra piece, so I don't.
I have had my Kitchen Aid for years, and I love it! It has 3 different attachments - a "whisk" a "batter bar" and a "bread kneader" (those are my namesfor them, at least) I love how easy it is to switch from one to the other. I cream my liquid ingredients together with the whisk and then add my dry ingredients - turn and pull, push and turn and VOILA! I have the batter bar attached and I'm ready to go. I can't imagine baking without my stand mixer. The only thing that I wish were different is that it is mighty heavy - it could stand to lose a few pounds :)
