“Buyer beware- cheap fabric -shrinks and stitching puckers”
I was in a time crunch and had to come up with a dress shirt for my son asap. In our area we do not have a lot of shopping choices so if I'd had time I would have ordered online from ********* or perhaps would drive the 40 minutes to the Sears or ****** stores. But no time so I went to Kmart that is barely 10 minutes away. The label on this Knightsbridge Mens dress shirt (which came with a hideously ugly polyester tie) said easy care 60/40 cotton polyester and was marked 39.99 but was on sale for 19.99. I thought it wasn't a risky purchase (and we already had a tasteful tie that would do). I did notice that it said "made in china". My son wore the shirt, and then naturally I washed it- exactly as the label indicated. Machine wash warm (I use cold) and tumble dry. One wash and the shirt now looks terrible. The stitching is puckered and broken around the sleeves and the whole garment shrunk in length so much that now my son won't wear it because it will not stay tucked in. I usually just let this sort of thing go... toss it into the thrift store donation pile. But something irked me about how this shirt was marketed -I felt that the packaging and labeling made me feel that I could rely on the quality of the product. So I found the receipt and took the (now clean) shirt and the original packaging back to Kmart. The young lad at the returns counter didn't ask me what was wrong with the shirt only looked at it and asked if I had washed it. When I said yes he told me that anything that has been laundered could not be returned. How ridiculous is that?! I insisted that he call the manager. She talked to him on the phone and did not come to the desk. I wasn't asked what the problem was. He asked the manager over the phone if a shirt that was washed could be returned. All that he was able to offer me was an even exchange for the same shirt. Does this makes sense? I am not happy with Kmart. Yes, I should have realized that "Made in China" on a Kmart product means "cheap quality". So do I exchange it and hand wash the shirt and hope this doesn't happen again? Or chuck it and say "lesson learned" - and from now on I have no choice but to drive 40 minutes to town and go to ****** or Sears. I might have excused the poor quality merchandise if Kmart had stood behind the quality of the stuff they sell. I don't think ****** or Sears would have treated me this way. I know that Kmart a few years ago wouldn't have treated me like this either. I've been shopping Kmart for over 20 years. Kmart has just lost my business for all the other items I used to pick up there. Since I'll be driving to ****** I will be sure to make all my purchases of those items there. Funny that it is was something like a dress shirt -something that I doubt that I've ever purchased at Kmart before -that would make me upset and disgusted enough to change my shopping habits.
