Any $300 netbooks will be quite slow; I suggest a simple Dell desktop (their new Zino HD mini-PCs are nifty and start at $229; add $110 for the faster-CPU upgrade.  Add a 20" monitor for $100 or so and you're in business), since it will be far more resiliant to little kids.

That said, if you're hooked on a notebook, bear in mind the Atom CPU is very slow compared to other modern machines; grab the cheapest Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Solo CPU you can find during the Black Friday sales; it will be _vastly_ faster.

Quite honestly, i just purchased the Acer Aspire One Netbook with the new 11.3 inch screen with the Intel Atom processor, 160 gig hard drive with 2 gig of ram, running windows vista for $299 and i absolutely love it. Yes they are a little slower than your normal size laptop which i do own and use for heavier pc usage, but thats is why they are called a Netbook. I can watch full HD youtube videos, surf the net and listen to music with no problem. I do reccomend getting a separate 8gig flash drive to be used as a memory boost (which is a new option in vista) which does help alot with the speed and gives it a little boost, but would be perfectly fine without one. If your grandson only uses the computer to surf the net, watch videos and talk with his friends on aim or yahoo, a $299 netbook will be just fine. As for the cable internet, yes all you would have to do is plug your high speed ethernet cable directly into the back of the netbook and he will be up surfing the net within minutes. The netbook can also be used wirelessly via a wireless hub in your home. So for the most part, i think your grandson would be very happy with a netbook for under 300 since most of the time they only use it to chat and surf the web! Feel free to ask more questions and i would be glad to help you with your decision!
