LockedDo you own a Generator?

With everything from ice storms and hurricanes to power grid interruptions, the need for a back-up power source is greater than ever. Do you own a portable or standby generator? If so, what brand? Are you happy with it?

I am estatic with my Onan Cummins 5500 I bought aat Costco.  It was about $700 a few years ago, but living in Coastal, Rural Oregon where Tree Limbs/Wind knock out power for days at a time...I have relied on it and would purchase it again!

Countrybears1 - How often have you had to use it? 2 or 3 times a year, or more? What do you end up powering? Fridge and other appliances, or more?

I own two generators. Both were purchased in 2002.

1. Power Boss 5500 purchased from Lowe's

2. Power Acr 4000 (Lincoln gas welder/generator

There are generators out there that can be hooked-up directly into your home power supply and those that use multi fuels. These two got me through Hurricane Katrina. I lost my house and lived in a tent for 3 mos. I was in my house when the hurricane hit. I'll never do that again!! If and when I do upgrade, I will go to a multi fuel like natural gas or disel.

I have a GENERAC 17Kw Standby generator and like the fact it is there when we need it without needing to be there to fire it up. It exercises every week for 12 minutes to be sure it's ready when the power goes out.

If the power is interrupted the unit starts up automatically and has power to the house within 15 seconds. Wouldn'h have another house without one!

Thanks coasterlover, that is great feedback. My parents have a standby unit as well, which just came in handy last week when theiir power went out. They can't imagine living without one.
