LockedBad mattress

posted on November 30, 2009 at 03:47AM Inappropriate?

My wife and I bought a Sealy pillow top mattress and box springs set last February.  Since then, we both have back problems that have led us both to conclude the mattress is at fault.  The mattress pops unbelievably when you change positions, or when you sit on the side of the bed.  We paid over well over $1,000.00 for the set and feel very strongly that the quality should be better.  Do we have any recourse, or can you help us in any way?  I'm not a difficult person to please usually, but the bad quality of sleep we are receiving has made it difficult for my wife and I.  We purchased this on our Sears credit card as well.  Please advise ASAP on what we need to do.

Hi pebble1962-Welcome to MySears.  I am not sure there is anything Sears can do to help with the issues you are having with your mattress set.  You may want to check on the Sealy website for their warranty information.

Let us know what you find out!

If you purchased the mattress and box spring through Sears, call 800 4 MY HOME. They will have the warranty information, and can help you with diagnosing the problem and what remedies there are, if any.

And, you might want to try a 4 inch thick memory foam, mattress topper, like we have.

You just melt-into the mattress...

after 2 months my sealy matress had a 1" indention in it. completely unexceptable for $1300.  i took pictures of it and sent them in only for them to tell me it had to be at lease 1 1/2".  i have begged and pleaded because this is the first time ever i am having back problems. they did nothing.  please tell your friends and family not to buy this product.

It sound to me that you need a firmer bed, pillow-tops are not as supportive. Usually the actual mattress is under warranty not the pillow topper as they compress and breakdown. I am a lighter weight person and the bed is fine, my mother however is not and her bed has an indent and she is having back problems. She recently slept on a very firm mattress for a week and though it was not as comfortable, her back stopped hurting. Unfortunately, this wasn't the correct bed for you or my mother.

We recently bought a Million Dollar Mattress because they had really good customer service. They don't sell the brands beginning with "S", so we had more confidence that the mattress wouldn't fail. I was told that all of their mattresses are custom made, when it's ordered and they got it right for us -.

Wow! I'm sorry it's not working out for you, but I'm also glad you posted this. I'm 2 seconds away from buying one of these (waiting on our income tax return)  but I have degenerative disc disease and it would probably make my back hurt more than it would help.

If you can't get anywhere returning it, there seems to be a huge market for gently used mattresses on Craigslist. It sounds weird.. even slightly gross but I sold my kids'; old beds in a matter of a day on there. You'd be amazed at what people would buy used!

That isn't gross. Don't be so uppity. You can encase mattresses in plastic now, so it's no big deal. That's where I'm looking for another mattress because I'm quite poor. I don't feel at all ashamed.

Not wanting to sleep on something that is holding years worth of someone's sweat, urine and other body fluids, not to mention pet accidents is hardly "uppity"

I bought a Sealy Maybank, Firm, Ful, No Flip and it has a sag, in the middle. I can not get a good nights sleep. Back hurts big time. I've had 5 inspections and because the center is only 1" impression they will not replace it. I feel ripped off. Any body working on a class action against Sealy?

Buying a mattress from craigslist can be tempting, but please keep in mind... not only are you potentially exposing yourself to other people's bodily fluids, but there is a huge bedbug epidemic in the US. Buying used bedding and furniture is one way to invite them into your home.

Sealy specifically states that they will replace the mattress if the body impression is 1 1/2 inches or greater.  1 inch does not qualify. They also do not take into consideration how the mattress responds with you on it. They require that you take a measurement with no weight on the mattress. The reason why they do that is because they do not warranty your "comfort".  Before you look into a class action lawsuit, please read your "limited" warranty.

That may not necessarily be the case, Bunneh0320. I bought the Cason Bay Queen Firm rather than the pillow-top because we thought the pillow-top was too squishy and wanted decent support, but I have encountered the same problems. We've had the bed just under 6 months and although it is not too bad when getting in for the night I wake later in the night to find I've rolled into a hole in the middle! We got this to replace a Simmons Beautyrest that was over 10 years old, but are about ready to go back to that. I have heard other people say to get a mattress topper... are they talking about the memory foam ones you can get at Costco?

No, not "uppity", but definately a statement made by a more fortunate individual who hasn't had the misfortune of having to settle for second best. Compassion, not criticism. Glad you're not getting the wrong new mattress, though. Lack of sleep can make people say things they regret, especially after 1:00AM. Good Luck!

We purchased a Sealy pillowtop from Sears (via the website) last January.  One year later it was 'sagging'.  We too, took pictures and sent them in-ours was 2" (which met the 1 1/2 " warranty guideline).  We've had NO problems returning it, getting credit for a new one, etc.  We've been completely happy with our customer service.  A mattress is a difficult purchase!!  Don't look forward to going through buying another one, but am able to make better choices this time!

Wow, that's not good... i'd definitely look into it.  I'm guessing the people at Sears would be helpful in finding you a new mattress...they're running a good deal on the Serta ones right now - think that's what I'm going to get.

50 year customer of Sears...Sealy Midnite Serenade mattress set $4,000...gave me HORRENDOUS backaches that at first I thought was due to gardening....by the time I figured out it was the mattress the short return period was over...and SEARS WOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT!!!! Have never been able to use the mattress, slept in my guest room for 9 months and now I have to go buy a NEW mattress because I want to be back in my own bed!  THANKS SEARS AND SEALY FOR NOTHING!!!!!

Umm, no. Diagnosing the problem is for in warranty washers, dryers, ranges, refrigerators, tractors, snowblowers, tv's....no diagnosis telephone line for mattress'.
