Hi,

I have a 5 year old GE spacemaker XL1800 which stopped heating food. Microwave starts and everything looks fine except for heating food.. Anyone with similar problem? Not  sure how much it would cost to fix or is it a better idea to replace it with new one.. appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

As a matter of fact my same model has done similar things. The fan got very noisey, then would fail to turn on leaving the inside full of steam, which blew the safety breaker inside the unit. I can get it to function for about a minute and a half then the breaker blows. I have the Adora model from Home Depot bought in Dec. of 2005. I called my local fix it guy and he said he rarely works on microwaves anymore. By the time he takes them down, opens the unit up to get at things and do some repair it already costs $200.00. Consumers Report says if the repair is half the cost of the replacement buy new. I'm buying but I sure expected to get more life out of this thing. We are empty nesters so we are easy on our stuff, no slamming doors, punching in the numbers, or running it for long periods. Honestly, even though GE ranks pretty high, I'm not impressed with my dishwasher either. The stove and refrigerator I'm happy with. My two kids have GE through out their homes and so far OK. My daughters microwave is noisey and got that way within months of receiving it, it's just that little stuff that bugs me because we paid more for GE on purpose. Grrrr.

Our GE Spacemaker XL1800 (4 years old) is doing the same thing (power but no heat) and my coworker has the same model and had the same problem and it was an internal fuse that can be replaced. I'll take the unit down and replace the fuse tonight, but if that doesn't fix it, I'll be buying a Bosch. All of our 4 year old GE Adora and Profile appliances are failing and we're replacing them with Bosch products as they do...

I had the same thing happen and it was the magnatron tube.  The tube was still under warranty, but the service call, repair and labor costs were $167.  This is the second time this has happened in about a year so this time we will replace.

I had a simular problem with the last two microwaves  prior to the one I have now.  I replaced a diode or another device in the circuit that went out and the microwave lasted another 6 months to a year.  You have to find out the values of the semiconductor device (diode) and make sure is of the correct value.  I suppose looking back it wa actually the tube megatron tube that was failing and was pulling (demanding)  more current through the circuit that caused the diode to overheat and burn-out.      My current microwave is smaller as a result of encouragement to not spend so much loot.  Well, this is probably a subject for another discussion.  I have to say my compromise was just that when purchasing the .8 cuft Emerson microwave.  I will eventually hop up to a 1-1.5 cu ft. Kenmore.  I was quite pleased with my Kenmore.  It was easy to use the features where as the Emerson I can not figure out the method of programing the cook time and % cook level.  We will see you around the Electro-Magnetic-Fields in responding to future thoughts. Mark
