LockedMicrowave/Wall Oven Combination

posted on January 15, 2010 at 01:48PM Inappropriate?

I bought a "Kenmore" microwave/wall oven comination about 21/2 years ago.  The microwave broke & I was told by Sears Service person that it cannot be repaired.  I want to replace the microwave but have been unable to find out from Sears (store, online) what I need to order to replace it.

The Sears people tell me that I need to replace the microwave & the wall oven.  While they are sold as a combination the microwave just sits on a frame & is plugged into a power source on the top of the wall oven.  They oven works well.

The original model was #790.4784,4784.  Am I expecting too much wanting a microwave to last more than 21/2 years?

Double check the model #.  I can find 790.4784xxxx, but not the exact model you have listed above. No commas in the model number.  Also -- Get the model and serial number off of the oven tag, not the microwave.

I, too, have a Kenmore microwave/oven wall unit model #790.4784.3407. The microwave is smoking and has sparks. What can I do? Can the microwave be fixed or replaced? The oven works fine. It is less than 2 years old.

I also have a kenmore combo. The microwave just today started sparking and seemed to almost start a fire. How do you replace it? Is this normal to start a fire?  Model 790.47853400 ser # NF 44614266

The microwave can be fixed. Check you owners's manual for warranty information as this is not a cheap repair.

There is a problem with some models of microwaves where the cabinet can have exposed metal and the microwaves convert back the electricity and cause arching and burning and can even burn holes right thru the oven cavity. some time this happens in the wave guide an it is impossible to repair. You might be able to get some help by calling customer service. Be sure you are polite and a life long customer, as were you parents and grandparents, You may get a concerned company rep. that would love to help a life long customer.

Well, so much for the life long customer thing!  My Mom was a customer and because of that I became one.  I bought my first washer and dryer for cash, back in 1981.  This house has all Kenmore products in it.  I have warranties on most all of them.  My refrigerator is on it's second warranty since I purchased it.  The last purchased warranty was 30 days before it expired.  The service man said while he was checking out my frig, that I could purchase the agreement from him and he would get the credit for it.  I thought I would help him out and so I did.  I purchase two more years from him.  I asked him if the date would change and he said no, to the best of my memory.   I still had 30 days before the old agreement was no good.  So I payed him the money and he gave me my receipt and  went on his way.  So two years almost go by and I remember this Christmas that after the holidays settle down I'll call and have it checked before it runs out.  I had not done it since it was sold to me.  The old one expired in 2-1-08.

So I call them up and they tell me that it has expired!  I said no I purchase a new one on Jan 4, 08 and he told me the old date was the expiration date..We are only speaking of a few days difference.  I went through three people, had to tell my story over each time and the answer was sorry, we can't help you!  I've been a customer forever!  All our power tools, hand tools, you name it are sears!  Not anymore.

Hi AnnHanby!  If you would like, we can have SearsCares, the customer service escalation team take a look at your warranty information.  They have helped many community members with warranty issues, and I am sure they will be able to get this straightened out for you.  Please send me a private message with your name, email and phone number and they will get in contact with you soon.  Thanks!

We also have microwave/wall oven combination (#790.4784 4785) and the panel on the microwave failed in less than 1 year.  Still under warranty. Repair techs out 3x to try to fix w/o success.  Finally given a replacement case # to pick our a replacement.  Unfortunately no 24in models appear online.  Will be visiting store soon.

We have a 1999 microwave/oven combo Model #911.49485991.  The microwave turntable is periodically not turning and doesn't heat when it quits turning.  Can this be fixed?  Is it costly?

never buy a combo. buy them separtely and add the trim kit. then when you have a problem you only have one problem and not two problems.

I also have a combo wall unit, but it's a Frigidaire.  The microwave broke after 15 months.  They agreed to fix it out-of-warranty (no charge).  A couple weeks later something broke in the computer and I had it fixed, but it broke again.  The repair guy said most of the microwave parts come from our nemesis, China, and they seem to be producing shoddy stuff.  I don't know if that's true or just his excuse.  But, since all he did was remove a circuit board and replace it, there doesn't seem to be much wrong he could do. So I wonder about shoddy parts.  I finally went back to Frigidaire and complained.  I had to "escalate" my complaint up to another level, but eventually they agreed to pay for fixing it plus give me $100!  It is now almost a year since the 1 year warranty ended.  That's a pretty good deal.  You might want to complain in the same way and see what they offer you.

I have a Jenn Aire/ Maytag/ Whirpool built in oven microwave.  The microwave board failed. The repair man could not find a replacement. I went on line and ordered from Parts=Select the only difference in the #'s was  for a black microwave.  The part works just fine in the white one.  Oh, the unit is 8 years old.  SO best is not always the best!!

My 790.4784 caught fire last night.  We've got a whole neighborhood full of these units.  I'm calling the builder and the HOA today.  I'm trying to figure out who to call at Sears.  This deson't seem like the kind of things that should be happen to so many people.  Appliances catching fire is not an issue to be repaired, it is a serious hazard that should be addressed by the manufacturer.

I just spoke to Sears customer service and got a lengthy explanation of how any electronic or heating device can catch on fire.  Sears evidently expects their products to go up in flames in an effort to generate repair revenue and seem have trained their staff in such a manner.  We will not be repairing our Kenmore appliance and will seek a brand that is less prone to disater and supportde by a company less accustomed to catastophic failure of their appliances.

Thanks Sears.
