did you check the house fuse or the internal line fuse, you need to be able to read a schematic diagram the check if there is a thermal cut out causing problem.

Anyone qualified to tinker with a microwave won't need to ask.

I hate to make it sound that way, but the average layperson probably shouldn't be messing around inside the microwave. There's not terribly much that can be fixed in them by the average layperson. A technician, electrician, or other gadget-tinkering person would have the know-how to diagnose and fix the issue without causing further damage or personal harm.

Honestly, I'd call that microwave a loss if it's outside of warranty and has no protection agreement. Fortunately, a new generation of microwaves has just hit the stores, so there's shiny new models to check out. :)

I agree with BlueCrew, it's dangerous, very dangerous to tinker with the electronics inside a microwave, the electric shock that it might generate could very well be fatal...  and there's not much that an untrained person can do plus the cost of repair it perhaps equal to or greater than the cost of a new one.

I believe I mentioned the ability to read a schematic diagram would be necessary to proceed.

there may be an internal bus type fuse,(like inyour mcar). You will have to remove the case to get to it if it has one.Besure you discharge any capacitors before touching any bare connections. Also the magntron tube costs much less than a new microwave and is not hard to replace.

My microwave just did the same thing last night.  I believe it cooked it's last dinner and I need to get a new one.  The one I have is only 4 years old.  It was a Panasonic and now looking at Kenmore.  Hope Kenmore is still a good brand that will last just a little longer!

My Kenmore Elite built in microwave stopped working and it is only 5 years old. Sears told me the part to fix it is no longer available. They will give me a $100 credit toward buying a new one. I thought Kenmore was a good brand. I don't think that anymore.

Just for fun;

How long do you think a microwave should last?

And, "how much" would you be willing to spend on this microwave?

Trust me, if you can---it won't last longer

Not sure about this but a salesperson recently told me that microwaves are only made to last up to 4 or 5 years now because most people want to replace them to keep up with technology and trends.  Oy!

Since you asked... personally, I think a good  microwave should last for 10 years or more for $500,  I can buy a cheap $30 one that will sit on my countertop for a year before dying so why should a larger one with all the bells and whistles die any sooner than 10 years (like $40 a year...)

P.S.  I could add that my parents' original microwave that was bought in the 1980's is still in use at my brother's home and working well.  Granted it sat in storage for about 5 years but when it was pulled out it was still working well.  That microwave is over 20 years old.  That's what I'd *like* to expect!

my microwave was bought in 1988 and has NEVER had a problem. It's a GE.

My Dad has a microwave from 1982 it's NEVER broken down... GE

I'm sorry but Kenmore just isn't cutting it.

Sorry, Arlo100, but I bought a Kenmore countertop microwave (not Elite)  (model  #564.8998600) in Nov or Dec 1986; it has been used EVERYDAY since then (except when we were on vacations) and it is still going strong today!!!  It even survived 4 hurricanes in 2004 when we lost our GE range and GE fridge due to power spikes/surges!!

I am thinking of replacing it now only because we are remodeling our kitchen and I want a microhood installed over the range.  The 1987 oven will not be discarded, but  will have an honored place in the garage shop and used when I am working out there... ;-)

My Kenmore Elite combination convection/microwave stopped last night.  Have had it 4 years.  It costs $129 plus parts to repair.  My fear is that either it can't be repaired or the parts needed will cost as much or more than a new microwave.  I paid a lot for this microwave when I bought it and I'm disappointed it only lasted 4 years.  My previous microwaves have lasted at least 10 years.  The model I have is made by GE (or so I was told).  I had the GE version in a previous house and liked it better.  Will likely go with a Samsung.

Wait...you're upset because when a product died after five years, you were given $100 to buy a new one?

To give you some perspective on this: name a good reliable car brand. Do any of that brand's cars ever break down? If one of their cars broke down 4 years after the warranty expired, what are the odds they'd give you enough of a credit to pay off half the price of a new one?

And, remember that you're talking about one out of literally MILLIONS of microwaves sold under the Kenmore brand every year. They are among the most reliable microwaves on the market. One person's single negative experience with a single unit is hardly an accurate representation of the entire product line.

And, seriously, you're getting a half-price microhood!

Samsung actually makes many of the Kenmore microhoods. GE no longer makes our products because the quality went downhill. LG and Samsung make the vast majority of Kenmore microhoods. They also make the vast majority of ALL the microhoods and microwave ovens on the market (Panasonic and Sanyo also make some countertop models).

Kenmore Elite micro & covection oven works fine (only 1 month old) but the finish is flimsy, trim and door don't line up, not exactly what I call quality. This unit is an LG made model. Kinda makes me wonder why I spent $7000+ to buy ALL Kenmore Elite appliances.

How do you tell if the Kenmore unit is made by Samsung? My fridge (Kenmore Elite) is made by LG. Not sure about dishwasher and stove, but they're both Kenmore Elite as well. I think the stove is a GE model.

The first three digits of the Kenmore model # reveal the source code (who makes it) before the period -- 123.XXXXXXX

Don't buy Kenmore mine lasted one year and a half.  Waste of money.  Sears did nothing.  Told me not their problem.  Went to a reputable store that stands behind the products they sell.  Kenmore not what is used ot be.
