Most Helpful Critical Review

I spent a lot of time reading reviews and trying out ellipticals before I purchased one but did not even think about reading the reviews about mats to go underneath them.  I returned the mat today because of the horrible chemical smell.  The smell did not fade after a week.  My nose and throat burned,...

Good mat, bad smell

Despite the user reviews complaining about a smell, I figured how bad could it be. I thought maybe it was like a new car smell, or that smell of a new shower courtain. Well it didnt take long after getting the mat under my treadmill did I discover that it gives off an odor that invaded both floors of my house. Another reviewer said it smelled like a Skunk, I would agree. It's just plain offensive. I know some people say it goes away, I wasn't willing to take a chance and I returned it today just 2 days after buying it.

Smell Overwhelming

When we purchased our treadmill from Sears, which so far we like very much but we've only had it 3 days, this mat was offered free with the purchase. WOW, we thought we're getting a great bonus as we had not even thought about a mat. Then we unrolled it and noticed the smell, very over powering. After 2 days, my husband has rolled it back up and put it in the garage. Fortunately for us we did not pay for this item. Maybe they realized they have to give them away to avoid the returns that they have to process.

Shrieks and Smells

This mat was placed beneath a treadmill to reduce static electricity buildup and protect carpeting. When the treadmill incline was increased, the treadmill belt rubbed against this floor mat and caused a loud shrieking noise. It appears the mat either causes or contributes to a problem, probably because it is too thick. The Sears installers told me to take it back to Sears for a refund which I'm doing today. I will look for a thinner mat

The Smell *Doesn't* Fade

This mat does, indeed, stink. The comparison to a skunk is apt. We waited over 2-1/2 months for the odor to fade, but it didn't. Fortunately I *was* able to return it to Sears as it was still within the 90 day return period. I ended up buying another one, for less money at a sporting goods store. We've had the new one for only about a week and don't know how it'll hold up in the long run, but at least we don't smell it all the time! Don't waste your time (or nose) on this one.

It's Ok

Purchased this pad to protect my carpet and the T9 ci treadmill we purchased. Was told this would fit just right under the treadmill but it is too short on length and width, at least for the Nordictrack T9 ci. Got it to fit by manuvering the treadmill so the wheels were about a half an inch on the mat on both sides to help hold it in place and put it about 3 inches in front of the tread belt and about 3 inches in back of the tread belt so it will at least have that much covered by the mat to cut down on the dust the belt can get and the lubricant that may fly off during use. The smell was strong... read full review »

We are in the same boat as the other reviewers regarding the horrible smell of this matt. We have aired the thing out for months with it not getting any better. Sears won't do anything about it because we purchased it more than 90 days ago. I was planning to contact Nordic Track but after reading the other comments I am not expecting a resolution from them either. This is pretty disappointing to say the least!

It Smells

The mat stinks. It has a very strong petroleum odor that just won't go away. I do not recommend this mat to anyone.

3 stars

This is a nice mat except for the smell! We thought a skunk was in the house! HA! A week has gone by and the smell is starting to fade away.

Great Product

We bought this to go under our elliptical and it is perfect! It protects the new carpet and I love the clear material!

This mat stinks

I recently purchased a treadmill from sears...which by the way I am very satisfied with. The salesman told me that I needed to purchase a mat, because the static electricity would damge it. I purchased this Nordic track mat. On the car ride home we kept smelling something strange....I didn't much of it, we thought it was the box from the treadmill. Maybe from the storage area. Well to my surprise when we got home and set everything up, we realized it was the mat. It has the most nausiating smell (like gasoline), it even gave us headaches. I took it outside thinking it would air out...no such luck.... read full review »

Smells aweful

Like the other reviewers mentioned, this smells HORRIBLE. Sears sold this mat to me for use with my elliptical, it did not have the dimensions on the packaging in the store, but I was assured it would work with my equipment. But after getting this home and measuring it, it is about 1 foot shorter than it needs to be for an elliptical.

Smell

Just one note: It will take about a month for the "plastic" smell to wear off. Buy one and you'll see (smell)

Unbearable Smell!!

I bought this mat to go under my Sole treadmill instead of Sole's mat since this one was clear and I thought it would look nicer than Sole's gray mat.  Well, I have been airing out my new mat for a week in my garage, and it still smells horribly.  I have never smelled anything like this from any other piece of vinyl/synthetic material.  As someone who suffers from autoimmune disorders, I can only imagine what these off-gases could do to my health.  I spoke to Sears on the phone, and they immediately said I can bring it back.  I guess I'll have to try the gray Sole mat.
