NordicTrack Stepper, MTN 740 —
This is more of a long-term use review of the MTN-740.
I bought the same model stepper in March 2004. I used it an average of 30-40 mins, 3 days a week over this time (working it pretty hard too). Just for reference... I'm early 30s, male, and around 180 lbs.
First thing to remember (and I knew this going in) is that this is not a commercial grade stepper. It isn't built to last long. Nordic Track offers a free 1 yr warranty, with an optional 2 yr extension. Companies know how long their products last, so I figured it had a 3 year life. (No I didn't buy the extended warranty)
Well, here we are a little over 3 years since I bought it and it broke. The end of the legs (where the pedals attach) broke off from metal fatigue. Yeah, the actual metal part got worn and broke off from the pedal. I'm now told it's an almost $300 repair fix, just for one side.
On the positive side, it does provide a great workout and allows for flexibility in the workouts. I got a lot of good use out of it.
Bottom line, if you can afford to spend $600 on a machine that will only last 3 years, I guess it's worth it.
Maybe if you get the extra 2 year warranty, you might be able to replace the worn parts before they break for free. But, I have no idea because I didn't research the warranty terms.
Happy hunting.
