LockedMaintenance of my Weber Genesis Grill

posted on March 28, 2009 at 10:42AM Inappropriate?
As summer roll around I am starting to think about how to clean up my Weber Genesis gas grill.  Does anyone know if there is a typical useful life of a gas grill?  Ours is about three years old and I have replaced the grates and "metal bricks" once already. Should I think about replacing the entire grill?

I think the typical life of a grill tends to be about 4-5 years.  Granted that may depend on how much you use it, how well you clean and take care of it, and how well built it is.

It really should be financial calculation though.  How much it would cost over the next couple of years to maintain your grill vs how much it would cost to buy a new one.

I like to push my toys to the limit, so I might keep a grill for 6-7 years, but I try to take good care of them.  Hope that helps.

Actually, we've had our Kenmore gas grill for going on 6 years now and its still working great.  Up until a year ago we had Sears come out every year and maintain it (they replaced everything on it over time!) but last year they said they couldn't renew the warranty on the grill -- which is fine, it is 6 years old after all.

The #1 thing I recommend (and I admit I don't do this!) is to keep it covered when not in use to help keep the elements out.  Other than that most parts on a grill are expendable.

I don't know if Sears still sells MPAs on grills anymore or not?

Grills have RPAs, or Repair Protection Agreements. They're basically MPAs, but without the maintenance checks and cosmetic defect protection.

I've had my Webber for 5 years and would never think of replacing it. I have replaced the grill grates once and need to replace the burner covers (those pyramid things that fit above the burners but this baby still starts on the first click, cooks food to perfection and looks pretty darn good (except for the side trays and some of the control labels). I have my father's Webber kettle one start and that big bad boy is 30 years old and looks and works as good as knew. The key is covering them in inclimate weather (I leave mine uncovered all summer long) and to give them a little washing once in a while. That's the thing about Weber's they last forever.

I have a Weber Gensis that is 5 years old too, I just replaced the pryamid things that go over the burners but I got some custom made ones on Ebay that are better made than the ones you can buy from Weber made out of stainless steel. I love MY WEBER and thinking about getting a 2nd one for my walkout patio so I don't have to run up to the deck and back.

I've had a Weber Genesis for almost 4 years now, and it is still working fine. It does have some wear & tear, and a little rust, but I think it will hold up for another two years at least. I've had really good luck with Webers lasting a while. I cook on it maybe once a week, and try to take good care of it. I've heard that grills can last up to a decade. http://www.bobbysbest.com/bbq-weber-genesis-e-310-propane-gas-grill-review.html

I've had a Weber Genesis Silver B for at least 10 years. The 5 flavorizer bars have been replaced several times as needed. I had upgraded the cooking grate to cast iron that had a porcelain enameled coating a few years ago. The performance of the cast iron is great as it retains heat when cold food is added and puts beautiful sear marks on whatever you are cooking. Improper cleaning by me using a metal scraper to clean the grate damaged the enamel coating. I Should have used wire brush instead. I bought a replacement yesterday (7526) and it has the enamel baked into the metal instead of a coating. I am looking forward to using it and proper care should result in it lasting a long time.
