Can the new Lithium  Ion battery work in the older model 19.2 v Craftsman portable power tools and can the old batteries be used in the new portable power tools?

If your 19.2v tools use batteries that say "EX" or "DieHard" on them, then yes, they can be used. If your batteries have the metal terminals on the outside surface of the neck rather than inside the top of the neck in a cross configuration, then they cannot be used.

That is exactly wrong. The only incompatibility will be between the Ni-Cad-only charger and the Li-ion battery. The Li-ion charger will charge the Ni-Cad battery, but the Ni-Cad charger will not charge the Li-ion battery (at least, not without potentially severely damaging the battery). The tools don't care what the chemistry of the battery is, as long as it fits and discharges the proper amount of electricity.

I have 1 of two 20V batteries from my drill/circ saw combo that is behaving strange.  One of the battery LED's is flashing when on the drill/saw (low charge indication) but when placed on the charger the charger LED will flash green once and then stay green indicating a full charge (false!).  While on the charger the battery's 4 LED's will do about 1 sequence of flashes (as if it were trying to charge) and then quit with the right LED staying on.  The other battery charges fine so I know it isn't the charger.  I suspect an electronic issue inside the battery case but it's got those stupid center point torx screws!  What's up?

Sounds like the battery isn't working properly. Beyond that, I wouldn't hazard to guess. I can't recommend opening the battery to tinker with it, as that has the potential to cause injuries. However, I can tell you that Sears sells security Torx bits in the drill bit area.

I am on my second Li-on battery set for my craftsman cordless set.  The first one always had trouble charging and eventually became defective, now the second one is doing it too.  I feel like it is more the charger than the battery.  Anyone else had these issues.  Never had a problem with my NiCad, other than just dying from age and use.

The Li-on battery must be charged with a charger designed for Li-on batteries.  You can also charge the old NiCad batteries in it, but you can not charge the Li-on batteries in the old NiCad charger.  Not sure if this is your problem, but I wanted to give a heads up.

The charger for lithiums will say multi chemistry on the box.  The four holer, and new 12 volt and the one that comes with the high capacity lithium battery are good ones to use.

Those stupid bits are called security bits, I think. The bit has a hole in the center to allow for the center pole on the screw. They can be purchased  many places where fine cheap tools are sold. Harbor freight etc. Most complete Bit sets include the poputar sizes.

I was planning on replacing my 19.2 NiCad batteries with the Li-on batteries when they become defective. I know I also would need the charger for the Li-on batteries. I was told that the Li-on batteries would be the way to go, but after reading some of the comments,it looks like  I would be better off to stay with the NiCad batteries.
